Don’t Wash New Clothes with Soap—Soak Them in This Instead, and They’ll Keep Their Color for 5 Years

Many people have the habit of washing new clothes before wearing them. This is generally a good practice, as it helps remove dust, chemical residues, and any unpleasant odors from the fabric. However, washing new garments incorrectly can lead to color fading and damage the fibers, shortening the lifespan of your clothes. To prevent this, there’s an extra step you should take to keep your clothes looking bright and fresh for years.
Soak Clothes in Vinegar or Diluted Salt Water
New clothes are very prone to color fading. For the first wash, instead of using regular detergent, it’s better to soak the clothes in vinegar or lightly salted water.
Simply mix vinegar or salt into cold water, then soak the garments for a few minutes. After soaking, rinse the clothes thoroughly with clean water and let them air dry.
This method is especially effective for denim and other heavily dyed fabrics. Soaking in vinegar or salt water also helps remove excess dyes and chemical residues that could irritate the skin.
Wash Clothes with Shampoo or Body Wash
Using laundry detergent for the first wash can sometimes dull new fabrics. A gentler alternative is shampoo or body wash. Mix about one tablespoon of shampoo or body wash with every 2 liters of water, and optionally add a pinch of salt.
Shampoo and body wash are mild cleaners that remove dirt without stripping color or damaging the fabric fibers, keeping your clothes vibrant and soft.
Soak Clothes in Fabric Softener
After rinsing clothes in clean water, consider soaking them in fabric softener. Fabric softeners not only leave a pleasant scent but also help lock in color and protect fibers, keeping garments looking new for longer. This step is particularly useful for delicate fabrics that are prone to fading.
Soak in Hot Water (For Heat-Resistant Fabrics)
For fabrics that can tolerate high temperatures without shrinking or deforming, you can briefly soak them in hot water, then rinse and air dry in a well-ventilated area. Hot water can help set colors and strengthen fibers, making clothes more durable. However, it’s essential to carefully check the fabric’s care instructions to ensure that it can withstand hot water without damage.
By following these simple but effective tips, you can significantly extend the life of your new clothes. Not only will they maintain their original color, but the fibers will stay soft and strong, allowing you to enjoy your favorite outfits for years to come. Taking a few extra minutes with these steps can save you from disappointment and frequent replacements, making your wardrobe both beautiful and sustainable.
