Emma Stone opens up about coping with fame after revealing she would like to be called by real name
Emma Stone has recently opened up about how she handles the pressures of fame, sharing rare insights into her personal life.
The talented actress, best known for her breakout role in the 2007 comedy Superbad, has gone on to star in numerous successful films such as Zombieland, La La Land, Cruella, Birdman, Poor Things, and the Spider-Man franchise. Despite her extensive career and continuing fame, Stone, who is now 36, remains highly private about her personal life.
In a candid interview, Stone revealed that she prefers to keep certain aspects of her life under wraps. She emphasized how different her behavior is at home with loved ones compared to her public persona. While she may be constantly in the limelight, her home life with her husband, Dave McCary (whom she married in 2020), and their daughter, is kept private and far removed from her career.
When asked about how she deals with fame and avoids becoming consumed by it, Stone admitted that it’s a “tricky” subject to address. Reflecting on the nature of fame, she explained, "I think everyone sort of deals with that now... We all can relate to that feeling of someone thinking they know you; feeling like you don’t have much control of the avatar outside of me. Because there’s me, and then there’s me, here." She further elaborated on the two sides of her identity: the professional persona that the world sees, and the real, more private person she is with her close family and friends. "They’re the same person, but it’s what I do to keep myself sane," she added.
Through these comments, Stone suggests that while she can't control the public's perception of her as "Emma Stone," she can control how she is perceived by her loved ones. It's this distinction that helps her maintain a sense of balance and sanity in the often overwhelming world of fame.
The actress also recently revealed her true name is Emily, not Emma. During an interview with her co-star Nathan Fielder, she explained that when she first entered Hollywood, she had to change her name due to it already being taken by another actress in the SAG-AFTRA registry. As a result, she adopted "Emma," but she confessed that she has always preferred being called Emily.
Nathan Fielder humorously introduced her as "Emily" during their interview, saying, "Her name’s Emily, but she goes by Emma professionally." Stone shared that over time, those who work with her closely often switch to calling her Emily once they get to know her better. She expressed that it would be “so nice” if even those who don’t know her personally would start referring to her by her real name.

In another interview, she discussed how she was inspired to adopt the name “Emma” as a child, due to her love for the Spice Girls and especially Baby Spice, played by Emma Bunton. Stone revealed, "Growing up, I was super blonde, and my real name is Emily, but I wanted to be called Emma because of Baby Spice... now I am." This decision, made in second grade, stuck with her through her career, and "Emma" became the name that the world knows her by.
In conclusion, Emma Stone’s openness about her personal preferences and struggles with fame showcases her authenticity and desire for a life that balances the public and private personas. She admits that while fame brings immense opportunities, it also demands sacrifices, and staying grounded among close family and friends is her way of coping with the pressures of being in the spotlight.
