Every night, somewhere in the Paraguayan city of Ñemby, an elderly man would look at the clock, leave his house, and walk several blocks toward a bus stop.
He was not going to catch a bus.
He was not heading to work.
He was not meeting friends.
He was going there for his daughter.
Her name was Belén Cárdenas. She was 22 years old and worked long hours, often arriving home around 8:30 or 9:00 at night. By the time her bus reached the stop near her home, the streets were dark.
And waiting for her was her father, Félix Cárdenas.
He would stand there until her bus arrived.
Then, once he saw his daughter step off the bus, the two would walk home together.
It was a simple routine.
But it was one Félix had repeated for years.
According to Belén, her father had been doing this since 2019. Before that, he would sometimes go all the way to her workplace to pick her up by car or public transportation. As she grew older, he gradually gave her more independence—but he never stopped being there when she arrived at the bus stop.
For Félix, there was nothing extraordinary about what he was doing.

On February 22, 2022, Belén posted a photograph of her father on Twitter.
The image showed Félix waiting at a bus stop at night.
The accompanying message was emotional and simple. She explained that she normally arrived home between 8:30 and 9:00 p.m., and that her father was always there waiting for her.
She ended the message by telling him that she never wanted to lose him and that she loved him enormously.
Belén apparently had no idea what was about to happen.
The photograph began spreading rapidly across social media.
People who had never met Félix began sharing the image. News organizations in Paraguay and other Latin American countries picked up the story. Within days, a private family routine had become an international human-interest story.
But the photograph itself was not really the beginning of the story.
It was simply the moment the rest of the world finally noticed something that Belén had considered normal.
Her father had been waiting for her for years.
He Wasn't Waiting for a Bus
The setting made the photograph particularly powerful.
It was late.
The bus stop was dark and relatively isolated.
And standing there was a 72-year-old man who had deliberately left the comfort of his home to wait outside for his daughter.
He was not waiting for transportation for himself.
He was waiting for her.
When Belén's bus arrived, Félix's job was essentially finished. He had no need to accompany her on public transportation. He simply needed to make sure she did not have to walk home alone.
That was the routine.
He would meet her.
They would walk home together.

Local Paraguayan newspaper Extra reported that Félix would keep track of his daughter's schedule and leave home to wait for her at the stop. The report said he did this to accompany her on the streets and reduce her exposure to the possibility of robbery, harassment, or other danger on the way home.
To Félix, this was not an act worthy of recognition.
It was simply what a father did.
In an interview with Extra, he described caring for his daughters as his responsibility.
He had been protective of them since they were children.
And although Belén was now an adult, his instinct to make sure she was safe had not disappeared.

For Belén, her father's presence had become a source of comfort.
