Every Washing Machine Has a "Hidden Switch" That Releases Dirty Water: Many People Don’t Know About It

The washing machine is a common household appliance in modern families. It makes laundry much easier, saving time and effort. You just need to put clothes and detergent into the machine, select the washing mode, and the machine will do the rest. Using a washing machine also helps clothes dry faster because it spins more effectively to remove water. While the machine is running, you can multitask by doing other chores or resting.
After using the washing machine for a period of time, it is important to pay attention to regular cleaning and maintenance. Routine cleaning helps remove dirt and residue inside the machine, ensuring that it continues to wash clothes effectively. If the washing machine is not cleaned for a long time, dirt and lint will accumulate and reduce the washing performance.
Inside every washing machine, there is a special component called the lint filter or residue filter.
Front-Loading Washing Machines
For front-loading washing machines, you will notice a small door located at the bottom right corner on the outside of the machine. Many people overlook this and don’t know its function.
This is actually the residue filter. You can open it to clean. Note that when you open this filter, dirty water inside may spill out, so it’s a good idea to place a bowl or towel underneath to catch the water and avoid mess.
Usually, you just press lightly and the outer cover will pop open. Then, you can unscrew the inner cap. Inside, you will find a lot of dirt and lint which you should remove using a brush or cloth.
After removing the filter core, rinse it thoroughly to get rid of all residue. Also, wipe clean the surrounding parts to prevent buildup.
Top-Loading Washing Machines
For top-loading washing machines, the lint filter is located inside the drum and is easy to remove. Depending on the model, the shape and size of the lint filter may vary. You simply take out this part, remove the residue, wash it clean, and reinstall it back into the drum.
How to Clean Your Washing Machine Effectively
You can use common household ingredients to clean your washing machine efficiently.
- Using Baking Soda
Mix baking soda with warm water and pour the solution into the washing drum. Leave it for about 30 to 60 minutes. Then, run a regular wash cycle or a dedicated drum cleaning cycle if your machine has one. Baking soda helps remove dirt, soap scum, and odors from the drum.
After the wash cycle, wipe the inside and outside of the machine with a soft cloth. Pay special attention to cleaning the detergent drawer and the door seal, especially for front-loading machines where the rubber gasket easily accumulates dirt and mold.
After cleaning, keep the washing machine door open for a while to let the inside air out and prevent bacteria and mold from growing.
- Using Vinegar
Another simple ingredient effective in cleaning your washing machine is vinegar. Vinegar softens and dissolves dirt and soap scum while also killing bacteria. Pour two cups of vinegar into the drum and leave it for about an hour. Then run a regular washing cycle or a drum cleaning cycle if available.
When the cleaning cycle is finished, wipe the machine thoroughly again, including the detergent drawer and door seals.
Why Regular Maintenance Is Essential
Regular maintenance not only keeps your washing machine clean but also prolongs its lifespan. Dirt and residue can clog filters and pipes, causing the machine to malfunction or emit unpleasant odors. By cleaning the lint filter and running regular cleaning cycles, you ensure the machine operates efficiently and hygienically.
In addition, cleaning helps prevent the buildup of mold and bacteria, which can cause skin irritation or allergies, especially for sensitive individuals. Keeping your washing machine clean means your clothes come out fresher and cleaner, protecting your family’s health.
