The Legend of Mohanmala: Half a Century of Courage, Conservation, and Flood-Time Heroism in Kaziranga

Introduction: The Matriarch of the Marshlands

For over five decades, deep within the dynamic, flood-prone grasslands and dense forests of Assam, India, a quiet guardian stood watch over one of the world’s most critical ecological sanctuaries. Mohanmala, an iconic departmental elephant at the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—defined an entire era of wildlife conservation. Arriving at the park in the spring of 1970, Mohanmala transcended the traditional role of a working animal. To generations of forest rangers, mahouts, and conservationists, she was a trusted colleague, an unyielding protector, an indispensable "unofficial ambulance," and a symbol of unmatched resilience. When she passed away in August 2025 at an estimated age of nearly 90, she was the last surviving matriarch of her generation, having outlived five of her closest mahouts and closing a monumental chapter in Indian conservation history.

Arrival and Integration into Kaziranga (1970)

Mohanmala’s journey into the history books began on May 17, 1970, when she was brought to Kaziranga National Park from Kamrup during the tenure of the then Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF), Durga Prasad Neog. At a time when Kaziranga was rapidly gaining global recognition for its successful preservation of the endangered greater one-horned rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis), the logistics of managing a sprawling, swampy terrain were immense. Mechanized transport was largely useless across the waterlogged terrain, thick reed beds, and deep mud of the Brahmaputra floodplain. Mohanmala was introduced to fill this critical gap. Displaying an innate intelligence, a calm temperament, and an eagerness to learn, she quickly adapted to her new environment under the guidance of the park’s experienced handlers. She was assigned to the core ranges of the park—most notably the Kohora Range—where she began her lifelong commitment to protecting India's wilderness.
