While trained human half marathoners carefully monitor their splits, hydration schedules, and pacing strategies, Ludivine approached the 21.1-kilometer course with the carefree attitude of an exploring hound.Despite treating the official race course more like a leisurely morning hike, her natural stamina and tracking instincts kept her moving forward alongside the pack. Throughout the grueling 13.1-mile trek across the Alabama countryside, Ludivine's race was far from a straight, disciplined sprint:
  • The Scent-Tracking Detours: True to her bloodhound heritage—a breed famous for possessing hundreds of millions of scent receptors—Ludivine frequently broke away from the main path. At one point, she bolted into a field to investigate a dead rabbit, and on another occasion, she stopped to interact with local mules and cows grazing near the trail.
  • Socializing Along the Route: Fellow competitors noted that the dog frequently trotted over to greet spectators, mingled with cheerleaders along the trail, and splashed around in roadside streams to cool off.
  • Catching Up to the Leaders: Remarkably, every time her human running companions thought the dog had grown tired or wandered off back home, they would hear her pattering footsteps catching back up to the pack, occasionally surging right past the front-runners before stopping to sniff something interesting again.
Tim Horvath, who spent a significant portion of the race running alongside Ludivine, noted that she maintained an impressive, steady rhythm despite her frequent sightseeing stops. Volunteers at the mile-8 aid station provided her with much-needed water to keep her energized.
