That was the context surrounding Roumie's prayer.
He was not describing a moment when everything was going well and he simply wanted more success. He was describing a point at which his plans had failed to provide the security he needed, leaving him uncertain about how to move forward.
For someone whose identity and future were closely tied to an artistic ambition, that uncertainty could affect much more than a bank balance.
It could raise questions about purpose, judgment, and whether the years of effort had been worthwhile.
Was he supposed to continue pursuing acting? Had he misunderstood the direction his life should take? Was it time to let go of the career he had spent so long trying to build?
These were the kinds of questions that made the moment significant in his later reflections.
The immediate problem was financial, but the deeper struggle involved how to respond when the future could no longer be controlled through determination alone.
The Prayer Before the Crucifix
According to Roumie's account, he eventually turned to prayer in a particularly personal way.
He knelt before a crucifix in his apartment and spoke honestly about his situation. Rather than presenting a confident plan or asking for a specific career outcome, he reached a point where he felt he needed to surrender the struggle itself.
In his later interviews, he described recognizing that he had been trying to manage his career according to his own understanding of what success should look like. He had believed in God, but he came to feel that he had not fully entrusted this particular part of his life to his faith.
That realization became central to the meaning he attached to the experience.
Roumie was not suggesting that he had stopped working hard or that pursuing a career was inherently wrong. Rather, he was reflecting on the difference between working toward a goal and believing that every aspect of the outcome must remain under one's personal control.
For years, he had been trying to make acting work. He had pursued opportunities, accepted projects, and continued looking for a breakthrough. Yet his efforts had not produced the financial stability he needed.
In that moment, he described letting go of his insistence on controlling the result.
The idea of surrender can mean different things to different people. In Roumie's Christian understanding, it meant placing his career, uncertainty, and fears in God's hands rather than continuing to carry the entire burden himself.
For other people, the same experience might be described as accepting uncertainty, recognizing the limits of personal control, or reassessing what truly matters when familiar plans stop working.
Those interpretations are not identical, but they can share an important human insight: acknowledging that a situation is beyond one's immediate control can change how one responds to it.
Roumie later recalled using the words "I surrender" during his prayer. He described the experience as a turning point in his relationship with faith and his understanding of his professional ambitions.
The significance of those words becomes clearer when viewed against the years that preceded them.
He had spent a long time trying to make his dream work through persistence and effort. Now, with his financial situation deteriorating, he felt he needed to release the belief that he could determine exactly how his story would unfold.
It was not a declaration that he no longer cared about acting. Nor was it proof that he had received a promise that success would arrive.
It was an expression of trust at a time when certainty was unavailable.
That distinction matters. Roumie's story is often repeated as a dramatic example of prayer followed by a remarkable outcome, but his own reflections also emphasize the internal change he experienced.
The prayer altered how he interpreted his circumstances. Instead of seeing his future exclusively through the immediate evidence of financial hardship, he began to approach it with a different understanding of faith and purpose.
What happened afterward gave that moment an even deeper meaning for him.
Four Checks in the Mail—and an Unexpected Financial Lifeline
Later that same day, Roumie returned to his apartment and checked his mailbox.
Inside, he found four checks.
The payments came from previous work, including residuals and other money connected to projects he had completed in earlier years. In a later interview, Roumie explained that one payment related to an expense reimbursement, while other checks represented payments that had been delayed or had not arrived when he expected them.
Together, the checks brought the total he recalled receiving to approximately $1,100.
That amount was significant because of the financial circumstances he had described that morning. He had been nearly out of money, with an overdrawn account and little food remaining. Suddenly, he had enough to address immediate needs and gain some breathing room.
The checks did not necessarily erase every debt or resolve the long-term challenges of his career. But they provided a timely financial lifeline at a moment when he desperately needed one.
The timing made the experience especially powerful.
Roumie had prayed that morning, describing a sense of surrender and a willingness to entrust his uncertain future to God. Hours later, he discovered the payments.
For him, the sequence was not merely a fortunate coincidence. He interpreted it as a spiritual experience that reinforced his trust in God.
In later conversations, he described the episode as a financial and spiritual miracle, explaining that it changed his understanding of what it meant to surrender his plans and rely on faith.
It is important to distinguish his personal interpretation from an independently established explanation of the event.
The checks were payments associated with previous work, as he has described. Their arrival can be understood as a financial event, while the significance of their timing is a matter of personal faith.
For Roumie, those two aspects were inseparable.
He did not need the payments to appear from nowhere for the experience to be meaningful. What mattered was that money he urgently needed arrived on the very day he had reached a point of surrender.
That timing became part of the story he would continue to share years later.
For people who believe in divine providence, his account may feel like an example of God providing help at precisely the right moment. Others may see it as a remarkable coincidence involving delayed payments.
Neither interpretation changes the fact that the experience had a profound personal effect on Roumie.
It gave him relief during a period of financial desperation and became a reference point for the way he understood his life afterward.
Sometimes, the significance of an event lies not only in what happens but also in how it changes the way a person sees the world.
For Roumie, the four checks represented more than money. They became a reminder that his future might unfold in ways he could not predict and that he did not have to understand every step before continuing forward.
And although he could not have known it at the time, another unexpected development was approaching.
The Opportunity That Arrived Three Months Later
The financial relief Roumie experienced in May 2018 was followed by another development that would reshape his professional life.
Approximately three months after the day he described in his interviews, director Dallas Jenkins contacted him about a television project centered on the life of Jesus Christ.
The project was The Chosen.
According to Roumie's account, Jenkins explained that he was developing a crowdfunded series that would initially involve only a limited number of episodes. It was an opportunity to participate in a new production, but it did not come with a guarantee that the series would become a major success.
For an actor who had spent years trying to secure consistent work, the opportunity was significant.
It also involved a role unlike most of the parts he had played before. Roumie would portray Jesus, a historical and religious figure whose life, teachings, and crucifixion hold profound meaning for billions of people around the world.
The responsibility was considerable. Playing Jesus required more than learning dialogue and appearing on camera. The role called for an interpretation of a figure whose image has been shaped by scripture, centuries of religious tradition, art, and countless previous performances.
