Haley Kalil: The ‘unfortunate’ part of NFL divorce story exploding

Haley Kalil and Matt Kalil attend the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit celebration of the launch of the 2021 Issue at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on July 23, 2021 in Hollywood, Florida.
Model and influencer Haley Kalil recently expressed regret that a fleeting remark she made regarding her marriage to former NFL offensive-lineman Matt Kalil went viral and overshadowed the deeper dynamics of their relationship.

During a livestream on Twitch hosted by streamer Marlon Garcia, Kalil – who filed for divorce in 2022 – opened up about their sex life, stating that the most significant factor in their split was the physical intimacy issues they faced. “We were trying to do the damn thing and putting in work in our marriage,” she said, adding, “Deadass… for our whole marriage, deadass.”  She revealed that despite seeking therapy, consulting doctors, and even looking into surgical options, they could not surmount the problem.

The moment that drew the most attention: Kalil described Matt’s physical anatomy as “two Coke cans on top of each other, maybe even a third,” before noting he was “.01 percent of the population.”  That remark was clipped, shared widely, and led to online commentary and memes. Yet Kalil emphasized that their full-hour-and-a-half conversation covered much more — including the love they shared and personal growth — and that it was “unfortunate that only one fragment is being amplified.”

Despite the intimacy struggles, she said: “He’s a really good person … we were really chill people” during and after the divorce.  As background: Haley and Matt married in July 2015 and separated in early 2022; she filed for divorce in May of that year citing “irreconcilable differences.” After his NFL career (which included time with the Minnesota Vikings, Carolina Panthers and Houston Texans) Matt went on to marry model Keilani Asmus in April 2024, and they welcomed a son later that year.

Kalil has also stated that while the viral “sound-bite” earned sensational attention, it did not reflect the full emotional and relational context of their marriage: “I care deeply about respecting his privacy and the integrity of what we shared together,” she told TMZ.

In the wider context, commentators say this episode raises a broader conversation about the boundaries of personal disclosures in an age when influencers and celebrities broadcast intimate life details—and how easily a single out-of-context comment can dominate media attention and overshadow the more nuanced story.
