How to Detect and Eliminate Eyelash Mites (Demodex Mites)
Demodex mites are tiny parasites that live in the hair follicles and oil glands of human skin, particularly around the face, nose, cheeks, and eyelashes. While they are a normal part of the human microbiome and often coexist without causing any issues, an overgrowth of these mites can lead to an infestation with a variety of unpleasant symptoms.
Warning Signs of an Infestation
When Demodex mites multiply too much, their dead bodies and waste can clog pores, leading to skin irritation and a range of symptoms. An infestation may manifest as:
-
Flushing and swelling of the skin.
-
Clogged pores, leading to acne and blackheads.
-
A rash-like appearance on the skin.
-
Intense itching and burning sensations.
-
Hair loss, particularly in the eyelashes.
Causes of an Eyelash Mite Infestation
An infestation is not necessarily a sign of poor hygiene. However, certain habits can contribute to an overgrowth of these mites. These include wearing a lot of mascara, as some studies suggest a connection between mascara use and increased mite presence. Additionally, sharing mascara or going to sleep with makeup on can also contribute to an infestation.

Natural Treatments to Get Rid of Eyelash Mites
There are several natural treatment options to help eliminate Demodex mites and prevent future infestations.
For the Eye Area:
-
Baby Shampoo: Diluting baby shampoo with an equal amount of water and using it to wash the eye area twice a day can help remove the mites. However, it's recommended to use a natural, sensitive-skin-friendly shampoo to avoid potential irritation from additives.
-
Castor Oil: Castor oil has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties that can help treat skin and mite infections. To apply, cleanse the face and use an eyeliner brush to carefully apply a small amount of cold-pressed organic castor oil to the base of your eyelashes before bed. Rinse off in the morning.
For Facial Skin (Avoid the Eye Area):
Important Note: The following essential oils should not be used on or near the eyes. They are suitable for treating mite infestations on other parts of the face, such as the nose or cheeks.
-
Tea Tree Oil: This is one of the most effective natural remedies against Demodex mites. It can be added to shampoo or liquid soap for cleansing, or you can find products like bar soap and laundry detergent that already contain tea tree oil.
-
Camphor Oil: Research has shown that camphor oil, when applied to the skin, can completely cure human facial demodicidosis at certain concentrations.
-
Oregano Oil: A powerful antibiotic, oregano oil can be effective against mites. Mix a few drops with a carrier oil like olive or coconut oil and apply to the affected area twice a day.
-
Caraway Oil: Studies have found caraway oil to be as effective as tea tree oil in eliminating Demodex mites. It can be added to shampoo or soap for regular use.
-
Dill Oil: Made from the dill plant, dill oil is also highly effective. Add a couple of drops to facial cleansers or hair products to help eliminate existing mites and prevent new infestations.
-
Clove Oil: This essential oil is useful in treating various ailments, including Demodex infestations. Mix a few drops with a carrier oil and apply to the affected skin area.
Other Treatments:
-
Olive Leaf Extract: This can be taken internally as a supplement. It is available in liquid or capsule form and is known for its health benefits.
-
Sulfuric Foods: Consuming foods rich in sulfur, such as onions, garlic, and eggs, can be a natural way to utilize the anti-Demodex properties of sulfur in small, healthy quantities.
