The HU Love Runs Deep: Taraji P. Henson and Phylicia Rashad Surprise Howard Student with Life-Changing Scholarship
The Howard University family spirit shines brighter than ever!

Actress Taraji P. Henson, a proud Howard University alumna, recently teamed up with fellow alumna Phylicia Rashad to surprise a deserving student with a transformative scholarship during a segment on Jenna & Friends (TODAY). Their recipient, Trinity Garrison, is a junior majoring in musical theater and a first-generation Caribbean-American, whose dedication to her craft and community has already set her apart.
Garrison shared her journey with TODAY, reflecting on how attending an HBCU (Historically Black College or University) has shaped her artistic voice and personal mission. “I think Howard has allowed me to become an advocate for the Black experience, for women, and for humanity. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without Howard University,” she said, emphasizing the profound impact of the institution on her identity and ambition (Howard University News).
A Heartfelt Surprise
During the show, Henson greeted Garrison with the iconic Howard University call:
“HU…”
To which Garrison enthusiastically responded,
“You know!”
The moment encapsulated the deep pride and tradition shared by Howard alumni. Both actresses offered heartfelt advice and encouragement. Henson reminded her,
“We did it, you can do it. Seeing people you admire succeed is the proof you need.”
Rashad then revealed the extraordinary news: Garrison would be the next recipient of the Dr. Andrew A. Allen Scholarship, a fund established in honor of Rashad’s late father, which supports students in the arts. Adding to the excitement, Henson announced that her partners were contributing an additional $5,000, bringing the total scholarship to $25,000 to support Trinity’s musical theater studies (Essence).
“To be seen this way—I’m so grateful,” Garrison said, visibly moved, her voice trembling with emotion.
The Power of HBCUs and Mentorship
Scholarships like this one highlight the vital role of HBCUs in nurturing talent. Howard University, often called the “Mecca” of Black higher education, has produced countless luminaries in the arts, sciences, and public service, from Chadwick Boseman to Kerry Washington (NPR). For students like Garrison, mentorship from alumni like Henson and Rashad serves as both inspiration and tangible support, bridging the gap between education and professional opportunity.
By sharing their resources and experiences, Henson and Rashad exemplify the enduring culture of giving back that defines Howard University’s alumni network. This act of generosity reinforces the message that pursuing excellence in the arts is not just an individual journey but a community-supported endeavor.
A Bright Future Ahead
Garrison’s scholarship will allow her to fully focus on honing her craft, participate in productions, and explore opportunities that might have otherwise been out of reach. As Henson remarked, moments like these demonstrate that success is both attainable and communal:
“It’s not just about talent; it’s about support, mentorship, and lifting each other up. That’s the HU family at its finest.”
For Trinity Garrison, the journey is just beginning, but thanks to the love and guidance of Howard alumni like Taraji P. Henson and Phylicia Rashad, the sky is the limit.
