A viral graphic claims that Larry Nassar, the former USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University doctor convicted of sexually abusing young athletes, was repeatedly stabbed by another inmate in prison.
The central claim is true.
Nassar was attacked inside his cell at a federal penitentiary in Florida on July 9, 2023. He was stabbed multiple times in the neck, chest and back, suffered serious injuries including a collapsed lung, received emergency treatment and survived.
Contemporaneous reporting indicated that he sustained 10 stab wounds.
The viral post, however, omits the date and nearly all of the context. Presented without that information, it may cause readers to believe the attack is recent or still developing.

The attack occurred on Sunday, July 9, 2023, at United States Penitentiary Coleman II in Sumterville, Florida.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons did not publicly name the injured prisoner in its initial statement, citing privacy and security restrictions. It nevertheless confirmed that an inmate was assaulted at approximately 2:35 p.m., that employees immediately began life-saving measures and that emergency medical services transported the inmate to a hospital.
People familiar with the incident identified that prisoner as Larry Nassar.
ABC News and ESPN reported at the time that Nassar was in stable condition after being stabbed in his back and chest. The outlet also reproduced the Bureau of Prisons’ confirmation of the assault and emergency response.
The Associated Press subsequently reported additional details, including injuries to Nassar’s neck, chest and back and a collapsed lung.
Therefore, the graphic is accurate in saying that Nassar was repeatedly stabbed by another prisoner. It should have included the date.
What Happened Inside the Prison?
According to AP reporting, Nassar was inside his cell when fellow prisoner Shane McMillan attacked him with a makeshift weapon.
The attack happened beyond the field of view of surveillance cameras, which were directed toward common areas and corridors rather than inside individual cells.
Four other prisoners reportedly intervened and pulled McMillan away from Nassar. Correctional employees then entered the cell and performed emergency measures described by officials as life-saving.
Nassar was transported to a hospital. Despite his serious injuries, he was reported to be in stable condition several days later.
Accounts based on a source familiar with the incident said he was stabbed 10 times: in his chest, back and neck. The injuries included a collapsed lung.
This is the basis for describing the attack as brutal or severe. It was not merely a fistfight or a minor altercation.
At the same time, graphic details should be reported carefully. The fact that Nassar committed horrific crimes does not eliminate the need for accuracy or turn an unsourced description into evidence.
