M.K. Prakasan: The Teacher Who Swims 12 km Daily to Educate Students in Kerala
M.K. Prakasan, a dedicated government school teacher from Kerala, India, has become an inspiring symbol of selfless commitment to education. For over two decades, Prakasan has been making headlines for his extraordinary dedication to his students. His daily routine involves swimming across the Valapattanam River in Kerala — often battling strong currents — covering a distance of nearly 6 km one way, and then returning, totaling approximately 12 km every day.
This remarkable journey is necessitated by the absence of accessible transport in his village. Prakasan teaches at a government school in Kannur district, where many of his students come from underprivileged backgrounds. The lack of bridges or ferries across the river forces him to take the strenuous swim every day, regardless of weather conditions.
Using an inflated tire tube for support, Prakasan carries his clothes and teaching materials in a plastic bag, holding it above the water to keep everything dry. This innovative approach allows him to ensure that his students receive their lessons without disruption, despite the challenging geographical circumstances.
The swim is not without its dangers. The strong river currents, especially during the monsoon season, pose a significant risk to his safety. However, Prakasan has continued this daily journey with unwavering determination. His passion for teaching and his commitment to his students’ futures fuel his persistence. His story has been widely reported by leading Indian news outlets, including The Hindu, NDTV, and The News Minute. His efforts have been lauded as a shining example of selfless service in the field of education.
Prakasan's dedication to his students has inspired many across India and beyond. His actions highlight the lengths to which some teachers will go to ensure that their students receive an education, even in the face of tremendous obstacles. For Prakasan, the daily swim across the Valapattanam River is not just a physical journey but a powerful testament to the transformative power of education.
