Nearly two decades after Matthew McConaughey first noticed Camila Alves across a crowded room in Los Angeles, he still describes their relationship with the enthusiasm of a man who remembers exactly what it felt like to fall in love.
For an actor whose career has included some of Hollywood's most famous romantic comedies, the most enduring love story in McConaughey's life did not come from a screenplay.
It began with a personal realization.
Then came an unexpected meeting.
Eventually came three children, a wedding in Texas, major career changes, family traditions and a partnership that has survived nearly 20 years of public life.
Looking back on that journey, McConaughey has described Camila in strikingly simple terms: after all these years, she remains the woman he wants beside him.
But according to McConaughey, one of the most important parts of their story actually happened before he ever met her.

By the mid-2000s, Matthew McConaughey was already one of Hollywood's most recognizable leading men.
His career had begun its dramatic rise after his memorable performance as David Wooderson in Richard Linklater's 1993 film Dazed and Confused.

He was making margaritas.

Then they began talking.
Their first conversation was apparently multilingual.
McConaughey recalled speaking Spanish and Portuguese with her during the early part of their interaction.

But what followed was not an instant Hollywood romance in which two people immediately knew every detail of their future.
Camila has recalled that she did not even immediately recognize him.

McConaughey may have been a famous movie star.
But fame alone was not enough to impress the woman who would eventually become his wife.
Camila Wasn't Easily Won Over
McConaughey has spoken admiringly about Camila's self-confidence during their first encounters.
He was interested.

Guests were even given the option of staying in elaborate tents on the property.
It was upscale camping rather than a conventional celebrity hotel arrangement.
The setting reflected something that would become increasingly important in their marriage:
Texas.
McConaughey was born in Uvalde, Texas, and his connection with his home state has remained central to his identity.
