Melania Trump's outfit choice when meeting Kate Middleton and Prince William has everyone saying the same thing
The British royal family and the Trump delegation are expected to engage in weighty discussions in the coming hours, as former U.S. President Donald Trump has arrived at Windsor Castle for what is now a historic diplomatic moment. Trump has become the first political leader to be invited by the British monarchy for two formal state visits, marking a notable chapter in UK–US relations.
Yet while the political significance of the event is clear, social media users have zeroed in on a very different talking point: Melania Trump’s striking outfit.
Trump and the former First Lady were welcomed at Windsor Castle by the Prince and Princess of Wales—Prince William and Kate Middleton—shortly after landing in the grounds aboard Marine One. The arrival followed a morning flight into the UK on Air Force One, where they were first received by Warren Stephens, the U.S. ambassador to Britain.
The couple were then escorted through the castle grounds in a formal carriage procession alongside King Charles III and Queen Camilla, with members of the British armed forces lining the route in traditional pageantry. The event comes with all the ceremonial detail expected of a state visit, from military guards of honour to carefully choreographed public appearances.
However, online observers appeared far more captivated by Melania Trump’s wide-brimmed charcoal hat, which she paired with a tailored grey suit. The look quickly drew comparisons, commentary, and jokes on social media platforms.
“Melania has deployed the big hat,” one user quipped.
Another remarked, “I’m sure I saw that exact hat on sale in the John Lewis lighting department yesterday,” drawing laughs for the dramatic silhouette.
A third added simply, “Melania’s wearing one of those hats,” echoing a wave of amused recognition. A more pointed comment compared her ensemble to past austere outfits she has worn during high-profile political appearances, including at the 2017 presidential inauguration.
Inside the castle, Trump, 79, and Melania, 55, are being formally greeted by the King and Queen. There had initially been uncertainty regarding Queen Camilla’s participation, as palace sources confirmed she had recently been unwell with acute sinusitis. However, royal officials have since affirmed her attendance.
This is not Trump’s first time meeting the British royal family. His previous state visit took place in 2019 under the late Queen Elizabeth II, during which ceremonial events, a banquet, and diplomatic meetings similarly shaped the agenda.
Over the course of this visit, King Charles III and Queen Camilla will host a state luncheon and guide the Trumps through elements of the Royal Collection that hold ties to American history. A formal inspection of the guard of honour is also scheduled, followed by a royal salute at midday. According to Sky News, the salute will be fired from six First World War-era artillery pieces stationed on the east lawn of Windsor Castle, as well as at the Tower of London.
Later, Trump is expected to lay a wreath at the tomb of Queen Elizabeth II, paying tribute to the monarch with whom he last met during his previous visit.
The British Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, will join the group in the evening for a musical performance by the chapel choir, followed by a Beating Retreat ceremony, complete with a military flypast. The evening will conclude with another formal banquet within the castle.
While the visual spectacle has sparked online chatter, diplomatic insiders suggest that serious geopolitical dialogue will dominate the meetings behind closed doors. Lord Kim Darroch, former British ambassador to the United States, told Sky News that the discussions are likely to focus on shared security priorities, global economic challenges, and strategic international alignment.
“Security is tightly bound with America,” Darroch noted. “This is a real opportunity to reinforce those links and make the best of them.”
He added that one particularly difficult subject is expected to be Ukraine, as U.S. officials have reportedly suggested that if European nations want Washington to intensify pressure on Vladimir Putin, they must be prepared to place firmer economic penalties on China and India due to their purchases of Russian oil.
“We all want to pressure Putin,” said Darroch, “but the practical implications of that proposal are very, very complicated.”
With political tensions rising across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, the conversations at Windsor are anticipated to be consequential—far beyond the fashion debates unfolding online.
