Michael McIntyre admits never seen before moment after Tommy Fury admission
Comedian Michael McIntyre was left visibly stunned after boxer Tommy Fury made a surprisingly emotional confession about his self-esteem during an upcoming episode of Michael McIntyre’s The Wheel. The special moment appears in a preview clip from this Saturday’s (November 22) instalment of the hit BBC One quiz show, now in its sixth series.
Tommy is set to join a star-studded line-up of celebrity experts including Clare Balding, Zoe Ball, Bill Bailey, Lou Sanders, Konnie Huq, Sam Thompson, and Pete Wicks. As always, each expert will be assigned a specialist topic and will attempt to guide contestants to victory — though one wrong turn of the giant rotating wheel can send players home empty-handed.
In the exclusive sneak peek, however, it wasn’t trivia that captured viewers’ attention but rather Tommy’s unexpectedly vulnerable admission. As McIntyre welcomed him onto the programme, the host cheerfully asked:
“Tommy, welcome. How are you feeling about the prospect of being on The Wheel?”
Tommy’s response was unusually candid: “I’ll be honest, I’m going to wing it today. I don’t know how I’ve ended up here, because I know nothing about nothing.”
Michael — clearly taken aback by the athlete’s honesty — encouraged him gently: “Tommy, I need you to feel a bit more confident in your abilities.”
But Tommy doubled down, admitting he struggles deeply with self-belief. “How can I? I’m not an academic person. I don’t know anything about anything, so I’m completely useless to anybody. I don’t know why I’m sitting in the chair to be quite honest with you.”

The comment prompted an immediate reaction from Michael, who exclaimed: “Well, I’ve never seen such overt self-esteem issues. We must all unify to help Tommy.”
Showing his trademark humour, Tommy then joked: “Well now, if I do well, it’s going to be a big thing, isn’t it? Because I’ve started off here. So if I win somebody a fiver, it’s going to put me up here, isn’t it?”
Michael fired back with a laugh: “Yeah, I think we’re looking for more than a fiver — but let’s see how the game plays out.”
Tommy Fury first rose to fame on Love Island in 2019, where he met influencer Molly-Mae Hague. The couple went on to become one of the most talked-about reality TV pairs in the UK, navigating parenthood with daughter Bambi, getting engaged, and recently addressing their widely publicised separation.

His personal life and professional boxing career were further explored in his documentary Tommy: The Good. The Bad. The Fury, which followed the 25-year-old as he attempted to balance the pressures of fame, fatherhood, and his turbulent relationship with Molly-Mae.
Michael McIntyre’s The Wheel returns on November 22 at 8.05pm on BBC One and is available to stream on iPlayer.
