“What does that mean?”

“It means I know something about your husband, but I need to be careful about what I tell you. Some of the documents I saw belonged to the company, and I won’t hand over confidential material unlawfully.”

“I understand.”

“Do you have an appointment with the bank?”

“Not yet. I’m arranging one.”

“Good. Keep it. And Vanessa?”

“Yes?”

“Whatever Sean tells you, don’t sign a statement accepting responsibility for money you didn’t authorize.”

I closed my eyes.

“How much money are we talking about?”

Rachel hesitated.

“I can’t verify the full amount yet. But I saw a transfer of $86,000 connected to an account called New Beginnings Holdings.”

My breath caught.

“Whose account?”

“I believe it was controlled by Sean and Nancy. But that needs to be confirmed through the proper channels.”

I sat down.

Nancy.

My best friend.

The woman who had stood beside me at my mother’s funeral, holding my hand while I cried.

The woman who had spent countless evenings at my kitchen table, listening to me talk about my marriage.

The woman who had just agreed to spend a week with my husband.

“Why didn’t you tell me earlier?” I whispered.

“Because I didn’t have the complete picture, and I was afraid of making an accusation I couldn’t support. I also didn’t know whether you were involved in the financial arrangement.”

“I’m not.”

“I believe you. But we need evidence.”

I thanked her and ended the call.

For the first time since this nightmare began, I felt something stronger than fear.

I felt determination.

Friday evening arrived.

I spent the afternoon cleaning the house, preparing dinner, and packing Sean’s suitcase. I even folded his favorite shirts, just as I had done before every business trip.

When he saw the suitcase near the front door, he smiled.

“You really are taking this well.”

I looked at him.

“Why wouldn’t I?”

He seemed unable to answer.

At seven o’clock, Nancy and Alex arrived.

Nancy wore a cream-colored dress and carried a small overnight bag. She hugged me tightly, but her embrace felt stiff and unfamiliar.

Alex shook my hand.

“Are you sure you’re comfortable with all this?” he asked quietly.

Before I could answer, Sean interrupted.

“Of course she is. We’ve all agreed.”

I looked at Alex.

His expression suggested that he had been given a different version of events from the one his wife had received.

That was the first sign that this arrangement was already beginning to fall apart.

We sat in the living room. Sean talked enthusiastically about the supposed benefits of trying something new, while Nancy avoided looking directly at me.

Finally, I placed my glass on the table.

“Before anyone leaves, there’s something I’d like us to discuss.”

Sean smiled.

“What’s that?”

“The rules.”

He relaxed.

“Of course. We should establish boundaries.”

“Exactly,” I said. “And I think everyone should understand what they’re agreeing to.”

I reached for the folder beside my chair.

Inside were copies of the loan notice, the bank’s correspondence, and the documents Patricia had advised me to preserve.

Sean’s smile disappeared when he recognized the bank’s letterhead.

“What’s that doing here?”

I opened the folder.

“Before we exchange partners, I want to know why someone applied to borrow $240,000 against our home.”

Nobody spoke.

Nancy’s face lost its color.

Alex slowly turned toward her.

“What is she talking about?”

Sean stood up.

“This is a private matter between my wife and me.”

“Then explain it to your wife,” I replied. “Because I certainly don’t remember agreeing to that loan.”

He reached for the folder.

I pulled it away.

“Don’t.”

His eyes narrowed.

“Vanessa, you’re making a mistake.”

“Maybe. That’s why I asked the bank to review the application.”

Nancy stood abruptly.

“I think we should leave.”

Alex looked at her.

“Why are you in such a hurry?”

She didn’t answer.

I turned to Rachel, who had arrived a few minutes earlier at my invitation and was waiting near the hallway.

“Rachel, would you please explain why you contacted me about New Beginnings Holdings?”

Sean spun around.

“You invited her here?”

“Yes.”

Rachel stepped into the room.

“I didn’t come to make accusations. I came because Vanessa deserves to understand what happened to her money.”

She placed a document on the table.

It showed a transfer of $60,000 from an account associated with my inheritance into an account connected to New Beginnings Holdings. The remaining $26,000 had come from savings shared by Sean and me, according to the preliminary information Rachel had seen.

Alex picked up the page.

“New Beginnings Holdings,” he repeated. “Nancy, isn’t that the company you told me you were planning to create for a coastal rental business?”

Nancy’s lips parted, but no words came out.

Sean stepped toward Rachel.

“You have no right to bring company information into my house.”

Rachel held her ground.

“I haven’t asked anyone to accept anything without verification. The bank can confirm the transactions. The question is why the money was moved and whether Vanessa authorized it.”

I looked directly at my husband.

“Did I?”

He stared at me.

Then he said something I would never forget.

“You signed documents, Vanessa. You can’t pretend you don’t remember every piece of paper you put your name on.”

“I remember signing documents for home repairs. I do not remember authorizing this transfer or a $240,000 loan.”

“You trusted me to handle the finances.”

“I trusted you to tell me the truth.”

His expression hardened.

“You’re making this much worse than it needs to be.”

I shook my head.

“No, Sean. I’m finally asking the questions I should have asked months ago.”

Alex placed the document on the table and faced Nancy.

“Tell me this is a mistake.”

Nancy looked at him, then at Sean.
