Then he pointed to the man in the background.

“Daniel?” I asked.

Tom shook his head.

“Brian?”

He shook his head again, then tapped the man's face.

“Mark,” he whispered.

“Mark?”

Tom closed his eyes, visibly frustrated.

“Mark… Ellis.”

I wrote the name down.

“Who is Mark Ellis?”

Tom swallowed.

“Consultant.”

I waited.

“Brian… introduced.”

He took several shallow breaths before continuing.

“Money.”

I held his hand.

“Was Mark involved in the transfers?”

Tom nodded faintly.

“Brian too?”

His eyes filled with tears.

He nodded again.

I felt the room tilt around me.

“Did Brian know about the loan against our house?”

Tom's expression changed.

He tried to speak, but the effort exhausted him. The nurse encouraged him to rest, and I stopped asking questions.

Later, the doctor told me that Tom's ability to recall names and events was encouraging, but that we needed to avoid treating his early recollections as a complete account.

I understood.

The investigation would have to establish what had happened through records, witnesses, and verified evidence.

Still, Tom's answers gave me a direction.

That evening, I sat beside his bed and asked him about the night of the accident.

“Do you remember why you left dinner?”

He stared at the ceiling for several seconds.

Then he whispered, “Call.”

“Someone called you?”

He nodded.

“Brian?”

A pause.

Then another small nod.

My throat tightened.

“What did he tell you?”

Tom's breathing became faster. He looked frightened, and I immediately regretted asking.

“You don't have to explain everything tonight,” I told him. “We have time.”

He caught my wrist.

“No.”

His voice was weak but urgent.

“Emily… listen.”

I leaned closer.

“I'm listening.”

“Documents.”

“What documents?”

“Proof.”

He closed his eyes, struggling to organize his thoughts.

“Company… money. Mark. Brian.”

He swallowed.

“Meet me.”

“Brian asked you to meet him?”

Tom nodded.

“Where?”

He tried to answer, but the word came out indistinctly.

I waited until he was ready to try again.

“Warehouse,” he whispered.

I felt a chill.

“Did you meet Brian at a warehouse that night?”

Tom nodded faintly.

“Then you drove away?”

His eyes filled with tears.

“Car…”

He stopped, breathing hard.

I pressed the call button for the nurse.

“It's okay, Tom. You don't need to force yourself.”

But he held my hand with surprising strength.

“Not… accident.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

He looked directly into my eyes.

“Not… accident.”

The monitor beside the bed continued its steady rhythm.

For several seconds, neither of us moved.

I wanted to ask him what he meant. I wanted to know whether someone had tampered with his car, whether he had been followed, whether the crash had been deliberate.

But Tom was exhausted, and his doctor had warned us against pushing him too hard.

I kissed his forehead.

“Rest,” I whispered. “We'll find out what happened.”

That night, I contacted the police officer handling my report and informed him of Tom's partial recollection.

The officer took notes and asked whether Tom would be willing to speak with investigators when his medical team considered him ready.

I said yes.

I also told him about Mark Ellis and the warehouse.

He promised to look into the information.

The next morning, Brian sent me a message.

We need to talk privately. There are things about Tom's business that you need to understand before you make another mistake.

I stared at the screen.

Then I replied:

If you have information about the financial documents, tell the police.

He called immediately.

I let it ring.

A minute later, another message arrived.

You have no idea what Tom has done.

I read the words several times.

Then I saved the message and forwarded it to the officer.

For the first time, I was no longer trying to preserve the peace between the brothers.

I was trying to discover the truth.

And I was beginning to suspect that the night Tom's car crashed had been the night everything changed.

Three days later, the police contacted me.

They had located Mark Ellis, the consultant whose name Tom had struggled to remember.

Mark had agreed to speak with investigators.

I was not told every detail of the interview, but the officer explained that several financial transactions were under review and that records connected to Northbridge Consulting had raised serious questions.

The officer also asked whether Brian had access to Tom's personal paperwork.

I explained that he had helped me manage documents after the accident.

“Did you authorize him to sign on your behalf?”

“No.”

“Did you give him permission to submit a loan application using your property?”

“Absolutely not.”

He asked me to provide the original documents when possible.

I agreed.

Meanwhile, Tom continued making small improvements.

He could speak in short sentences, and his memory of the weeks before the accident was becoming clearer. He remembered the argument he had with Brian, the call that had drawn him out of the house, and the meeting he had expected to attend.

But he was still unable to recall every detail.

One morning, he asked me for a notebook.

I brought him a pen and sat beside him while he wrote slowly.

The first line took nearly a minute.

Brian said the money was temporary.

The second was harder.

He said he would replace it before anyone noticed.

I waited.

Tom rested for several minutes before continuing.

Mark knew about the transfers.

Then:

I found the loan papers.

I stared at the page.

“Were the loan papers connected to our house?”

Tom nodded.

“Did you tell Brian you knew?”

He nodded again.

“Was that why he called you that night?”

Tom closed his eyes, then opened them.

“Yes.”

I took a slow breath.

“Did you meet him at the warehouse?”

“Yes.”

“What happened there?”

Tom looked away.

His fingers trembled around the pen.

He wrote a few words, crossed them out, and tried again.

I confronted him.

He paused.

He said I had no choice.

I felt sick.

“What did he mean?”

Tom shook his head.

He wrote another sentence.

He had already used my signature.

Then he stopped.

The nurse entered to check his vital signs, and I put the notebook aside.

I was angry, frightened, and heartbroken.

Brian had not simply been a brother who made a terrible financial decision. If Tom's recollection was accurate, he had been trying to conceal it by manipulating the people around him.

But the question of the accident remained unanswered.

The police were investigating it separately, and I knew that a damaged car and a frightening memory were not enough to prove that someone had deliberately caused the crash.

That afternoon, Brian arrived at the hospital again.

This time, he did not bring flowers.

He asked to speak with me privately.

I refused to leave Tom's room.

“Whatever you need to say, you can say it here.”

Brian glanced at his brother.

“Tom, I know you're awake. I know you can hear me.”

Tom watched him silently.

Brian rubbed his face.

“I made mistakes.”

I said nothing.

“I was under pressure. The company was in trouble, and Mark told me there was a way to move money temporarily. He said it would be replaced before the accounts were reviewed.”

“Did you submit a loan application using our house?”

Brian looked at me.

“I didn't think it would go through.”

“That isn't what I asked.”

He swallowed.

“Yes.”

The room seemed to go silent.

“You forged my signature?”

“I was going to explain everything.”

“When?”

“When things were fixed.”

“How could you fix something like that?”

His eyes reddened.

“I thought I could replace the money. I thought I could get us out of it before anyone knew.”

“Us?”

He flinched.

“Me. I meant me.”

I stared at him.

For the first time, Brian seemed unable to hide behind charm or excuses.

He looked like a frightened man who had finally run out of places to put his guilt.

“Did you cause Tom's accident?” I asked.
