Nicki Minaj deportation petitions explained as over 120,000 people sign amid backlash
Nicki Minaj Faces Backlash and Calls for Deportation Amid Controversial Political Appearances
Nicki Minaj, the Trinidadian-born rapper and global music icon, has recently found herself at the center of intense public scrutiny, with several petitions circulating online calling for her deportation from the United States. Known for her chart-topping hits like Super Bass and Starships, Minaj has maintained a massive fanbase over the past decade. However, her recent political affiliations and public appearances have sparked outrage among former fans and the broader public.
According to NBC News and People Magazine, the controversy intensified after Minaj attended a Turning Point USA event in Phoenix, Arizona, on December 21, 2025. At this conservative youth organization’s event, she shared the stage with Erika Kirk, widow of social media conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was tragically killed in September. During her speech, Minaj referenced political figures like former President Donald Trump and Senator JD Vance as role models for young men, using the word “assassin” in an apparent positive context, which many critics considered insensitive given the recent tragic events. Minaj paused mid-sentence, visibly realizing the potential misstep, while Erika Kirk reassured her on stage, emphasizing understanding and forgiveness (AFP, Getty Images).
Public reaction online was swift and polarized. Many long-time fans condemned Minaj for aligning herself with conservative figures, particularly Trump and Vance, highlighting the apparent contradiction between her earlier support for LGBTQ+ rights and her current political statements. Twitter users described her remarks as “extremely careless” and criticized what they perceived as her detachment from reality due to celebrity wealth and influence. Others, however, defended her, noting her consistent dedication to activism and freedom of speech.
In response to these appearances, multiple petitions on Change.org have emerged, calling for Minaj’s deportation back to her native Trinidad and Tobago. One petition amassed over 46,000 signatures, while another reached more than 87,000, citing her political statements and public actions as concerning for the community. Minaj herself has openly acknowledged her immigration status: she entered the United States illegally at age five, and in 2024 confirmed in a TikTok livestream that she has never formally obtained U.S. citizenship. Nevertheless, she holds a U.S. green card, granting her permanent residency and the legal right to live and work in the country (ACLU, 2025).
Legal experts have noted that these petitions carry no legal weight. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) emphasized that freedom of speech is protected under the First Amendment, regardless of an individual’s immigration status. As such, Minaj cannot legally be deported simply for expressing her political views (ACLU.org, 2025). The petitions instead reflect public sentiment and controversy surrounding celebrity involvement in politics.
The uproar surrounding Minaj is compounded by a history of highly visible activism. In November 2025, she collaborated with the Trump administration to raise awareness about alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria. While some praised her commitment to using her influence for social justice, others criticized the move as politically motivated and disconnected from the complexities of Nigeria’s religious and political landscape (BBC News, 2025). Critics argued that celebrity involvement in geopolitical issues can oversimplify and politicize real crises, emphasizing influence over nuanced understanding.
Minaj’s interactions with fans on social media have also attracted attention. Following the Turning Point event, she reportedly deleted her Instagram account, though the reasons remain speculative. Observers noted that she has a history of temporarily deactivating her accounts, a pattern that may simply reflect her desire to manage public scrutiny rather than signal guilt or avoidance. Despite this, her fanbase—known as the "Barbz"—remains highly supportive, with many pointing out her continued commercial success and streaming dominance as evidence that controversy is unlikely to harm her career significantly (Variety, 2025).
Beyond politics, Minaj has inadvertently influenced online trends, including viral challenges inspired by her music videos. One such instance, the so-called “stiletto challenge,” led to a Russian influencer, Marina Barutkina, sustaining severe injuries, including a spinal fracture, after attempting to replicate Minaj’s iconic high-heel poses (CNN, 2025). Minaj later shared footage of herself demonstrating the correct technique, highlighting her awareness of the risks while engaging with fans’ enthusiasm online.
Nicki Minaj’s story highlights the complex intersection of celebrity, politics, social media, and public perception. While petitions and backlash demonstrate public disapproval, legal experts confirm that they have no power to dictate her residency or professional activities. For her fans and critics alike, the episode underscores the significant influence public figures wield, the intense scrutiny they face, and the challenges of navigating global fame in a highly polarized political environment.
