Outrunning the Mountain: How the "Mud Buddha" Saved an Entire Village

Navigating slippery mud paths and torrential sheets of rain, Tian sprinted from door to door. Shouting through his loudspeaker, his voice cut through the howling wind: "The rainfall is too big! Wake up quickly and go to a safe place!" Shanghongyan is a tight-knit community comprising 21 households. Moving methodically, Tian pounded on wooden doors, roused sleeping families, and guided elderly residents and children toward designated evacuation routes.However, the mountain was not waiting for them to finish. As Tian navigated a sharp corner near the edge of the village, a sudden surge of floodwater and loose debris swept him off his feet. Propelled violently into the roaring torrent, Tian was swallowed by the dark sludge.
"I knew there was danger, but I must walk on to urge villagers to leave," Tian later recalled.
In a desperate fight for survival, swept along by the debris, Tian managed to reach out and grab onto a sturdy tree trunk with every ounce of strength he had left. Fighting against the crushing weight of the water, he pulled himself out of the primary flow.

The Choice to Return

Moments later, as the immediate surge subsided slightly, Tian clawed his way back to his feet. Battered, bleeding, completely exhausted, and caked from head to toe in thick, grey mud, he faced a choice. He had cheated death. He could have easily climbed up to the ridge, sought medical attention, and waited out the storm.
