Recognizing the brewing danger, Tian Ruliang had already left his home three times after 10 p.m. to monitor the swelling local river levels and check on vulnerable spots. By 3 a.m., the situation had escalated from critical to catastrophic. The river running through the valley had breached safe parameters, and the sound of shifting earth echoed through the gorges.
