PART 3: “At seventy-three, I married my dy:ing high school sweetheart because it was his final wish.

At seventy-three, I married the boy who had once been my first love.
He was dying, and fulfilling one final dream was all he wanted before saying goodbye.
The morning after his funeral, his attorney arrived at my front door carrying a small wooden box.
After I invited him inside, he looked at me with an expression I couldn’t quite understand.
Then he quietly said,
“Thomas knew exactly what would happen. He said you’d walk right into his trap.”
Those words sent a chill through me.
I never imagined that I would become a bride again, especially at my age.
Yet life has a remarkable way of bringing unfinished stories back when you least expect them.
Thomas and I first met as teenagers.
We were both seventeen when we fell in love.
Back then, my biggest dream was attending college in another city, while Thomas planned to stay in our hometown and eventually help manage his father’s business.
On the day I left, he met me at the bus station.
He begged me not to go.
He asked me to stay and build a future with him instead.
But I had worked too hard to give up the opportunities waiting for me.
When I stepped onto that bus, I believed I was making the right decision.
Thomas stood on the platform with tears in his eyes.
Before the doors closed, he quietly told me I had broken his heart.
Those were the last words we exchanged.
Life carried us in different directions.
More than fifty-six years passed without another meeting.
Several months ago, circumstances brought me back to the town where everything had begun.
Retirement wasn’t stretching as far as it once had, so I accepted a part-time nursing position at the local hospital, returning to the profession I had loved for many years.
I never imagined that my first week back would change everything.
One morning, I entered a patient’s room to begin my rounds.
As I glanced at the chart, one name immediately caught my attention.
Thomas.
My heart skipped a beat.
Slowly, I looked toward the bed.
The man resting there looked far different from the young man I remembered.
Time and illness had changed him.
He appeared thin and exhausted.
But when our eyes met, recognition was instant.
A gentle smile spread across his face.
“Hello, Nancy,” he said softly.
From that day forward, every shift became something I quietly looked forward to.
Whenever my work allowed, we’d sit together and talk.
We reminisced about high school, old friends, and the little town where our story had first begun.
Eventually, our conversations moved beyond memories.
We talked about our lives.
Our regrets.
Our hopes.
We discovered something surprising.
Neither of us had ever married.
Despite everything that had happened, neither of us had truly forgotten the other.
It was as though the decades separating us slowly disappeared each time we spoke.
Then, one quiet afternoon, Thomas reached for my hand.
“Nancy,” he whispered, “there’s something I’ve wanted to ask you for almost my entire life.”
His expression told me how serious he was before he spoke another word.
“I’ve loved you every single day since we were seventeen.”
His voice trembled.
“I know I don’t have much time left… but I’ve always dreamed of calling you my wife.”
He looked directly into my eyes.
“Will you marry me? Let me spend whatever time I have left beside the woman I’ve always loved.”
Tears filled my eyes.

Thomas had advanced cancer.
He knew his time was limited.
And after spending decades wondering what our lives might have looked like if I had stayed, I couldn’t bear the thought of walking away from him a second time.
So I said yes.
A few days later, we exchanged vows inside his hospital room.
There were no elaborate decorations.
No wedding reception.
No orchestra.
Just a kind nurse, Thomas’s attorney, and two people who had found each other again after more than half a century apart.
As we promised to love one another, his eyes sparkled with happiness.
Mine did too.
For one precious month, I had the privilege of being Thomas’s wife.
Then he peacefully passed away.
No matter how much I tried preparing myself, nothing softened the pain.
Losing him felt strangely similar to losing him all those years ago at the bus station.
Except this time, I knew there would never be another reunion.
The morning after his funeral, someone knocked on my front door.
Thomas’s attorney stood outside holding a small wooden box.
Once inside, he set it carefully on the table and looked at me with a knowing smile.
“Thomas always believed this day would come,” he said quietly.
“He told me you’d eventually walk straight into his trap.”
Confused, I looked from the attorney to the box.
My hands trembled as I slowly lifted the lid.
The moment I saw what Thomas had left for me inside…
I couldn’t stop myself from screaming.
