Derek Shepherd died.
The April 2015 episode stunned Grey’s Anatomy viewers. After helping people involved in a car accident, Derek was himself critically injured in another crash and ultimately died after receiving inadequate medical treatment.
Dempsey’s 11-season run as one of the show’s defining characters was over.
It is tempting to connect that departure directly to his marriage crisis and say that he deliberately had Derek killed so that he could save his family.
The documented story is more nuanced.
Dempsey later said that he believed it was simply time for him to leave the series.
He told People that he had probably stayed longer than he should have and wanted greater control over his schedule. He also said that he and series creator Shonda Rhimes were both ready for the transition.
As for the decision to kill Derek rather than simply send him away, Dempsey discussed it as a creative decision rather than claiming that he personally demanded his character’s death.
Still, the timing meant that leaving Grey’s Anatomy dramatically changed his daily life during the same period in which he was reassessing his marriage and family priorities.
Without the relentless schedule of a long-running network drama, Dempsey had more freedom.
He later told ABC News that leaving the show gave him time to think and feel more carefully about his choices.
That did not mean abandoning acting.
He went on to make Bridget Jones’s Baby, starring alongside Renée Zellweger and Colin Firth, and continued pursuing film and television projects.
But the structure of his life had changed.
Signs of Reconciliation Began to Appear
For months after the divorce filing, the public knew little about what was happening privately.
Then signs began appearing that Dempsey and Fink might be finding their way back to one another.
In late 2015, they were photographed together in Paris, fueling speculation that the marriage might survive.
By January 2016, reports indicated that they were spending time together and working toward reconciliation.
Then Dempsey himself confirmed the direction things were moving.
Asked by the Evening Standard in May 2016 whether he and Fink had reconciled, he answered, “Yeah, I think so.”
His comments were not triumphant.
Instead, they focused on effort.
“You have to work at everything,” he said.
That idea became a recurring theme whenever he discussed the marriage.
Relationships required attention.
Communication mattered.
People could not assume that years together automatically guaranteed more years in the future.
And reconciliation was not presented as a magical reset button.
Dempsey described it as a “new beginning.”
Choosing to Fight for the Relationship
By September 2016, Dempsey was speaking more openly about what had happened.
He said he had not been prepared to give up on Fink—and that she had not been prepared to give up on him either.
“We both wanted to fight for it,” he said.
That sentence perhaps captures the story better than the dramatic claim that one Hollywood star sacrificed his entire career to win back his wife.
Because the evidence shows something more complicated.
He did not disappear from acting.
He did not completely abandon racing.
And there is no solid basis for saying that he personally ordered the death of Derek Shepherd solely to repair his marriage.
