Kelce’s absence was caused by a straightforward scheduling conflict, not an apparent relationship problem. Swift’s outfit was also correctly described as silver and sequined, although the complete design combined its sparkling silver skirt with a sculpted black bodice.
Together, the two images captured an unusual but easily explained moment in the couple’s increasingly public marriage: Swift was making music history in Los Angeles while Kelce was fulfilling his professional obligations on a football field in Miami.
Why Travis Kelce Was Not at the VMAs
The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards took place at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 27.
On the same day, Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs were scheduled to play the Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
That conflict made it effectively impossible for Kelce to accompany Swift to the awards ceremony.
Although an NFL game and an awards show might occupy similar places on the celebrity calendar, they are not comparable professional obligations. Kelce could not simply skip a regular-season game to attend a red carpet event. As an active Chiefs player, he was expected to prepare, participate and remain with his team.
Entertainment outlets including Elle, E! News and Us Weekly all reported that the football schedule was the reason for his absence.
The timing also ruled out a quick trip between the two events. Miami and Los Angeles are separated by approximately 2,300 miles, and the football game was being played on the same day as the VMAs.
Consequently, Swift arrived without Kelce and handled the evening as a solo professional appearance.
