Khloe the Pregnant Jack Russell Who Had Her Own Maternity Photoshoot

When people think about a maternity photoshoot, they usually picture an expecting mother standing in front of a carefully decorated backdrop, surrounded by flowers, soft fabrics, elegant lighting and perhaps a few sentimental props.

But in 2021, one Kentucky family decided to give that same glamorous treatment to an unexpected star: a pregnant Jack Russell terrier named Khloe.

Expecting her first litter of puppies, Khloe became the center of an elaborate maternity photoshoot arranged by her owner, animal photographer Caitlin Snyman. Instead of simply taking a quick photograph to announce the pregnancy, Snyman created an entire pink-themed setup featuring flowers, ribbons, blankets and soft decorative details.

Khloe, meanwhile, appeared perfectly prepared for her moment in front of the camera.

The result was a collection of photographs that looked remarkably similar to a traditional human maternity session — except the glowing mother-to-be had four paws, a wagging tail and four puppies growing inside her.

At the time of the session, Khloe was reportedly expecting four puppies. The shoot took approximately three hours, and the photographs soon began circulating widely online. What started as a personal way to celebrate Khloe's pregnancy and share the news with friends and family turned into an unexpectedly viral internet moment.

Years later, the photographs have continued to resurface on social media, introducing new audiences to the little dog who became known for her adorable “paw-ternity” photoshoot.

A Very Special Pregnancy Announcement

The story began with a simple idea.

Caitlin Snyman wanted to celebrate Khloe's first pregnancy in a memorable way. According to coverage of the original photoshoot, Snyman was already accustomed to photographing Khloe because the dog enjoyed posing and performing tricks for the camera. That familiarity apparently made Khloe a natural candidate for a more elaborate portrait session.

Rather than treating the pregnancy as an ordinary announcement, Snyman decided to create something special.

The setting was deliberately feminine and playful. Pink became the dominant theme, with flowers, ribbons and a soft blanket helping create the atmosphere. The decorations were reminiscent of the elaborate styling commonly seen in maternity portraits for expecting parents.

The idea may sound unusual, but it also reflected something increasingly familiar to many pet owners: dogs are not simply animals living in the household. They can become deeply integrated into family life, celebrations and important milestones.

For Snyman, Khloe's pregnancy was one of those milestones.

The photoshoot therefore became more than just a collection of cute pictures. It was a way of marking a significant moment in Khloe's life — the transition into motherhood.

And Khloe seemed ready to play her part.

Meet Khloe, the Four-Legged Model

Jack Russell terriers are small dogs, but they are known for having energetic and distinctive personalities. Khloe's behavior during the photoshoot added another layer to the story.

Instead of looking uncomfortable or confused by the attention, she appeared to cooperate with the session. Photographs showed her sitting proudly, displaying her growing belly and posing against the carefully arranged backdrop.

In some images, she looked directly toward the camera. In others, she appeared relaxed, surrounded by flowers and soft fabrics.

The contrast was part of the charm.

A maternity photoshoot is normally associated with human pregnancy, so seeing a tiny terrier placed in an equally elaborate setting created an amusing visual surprise. The decorations were serious, the lighting was carefully arranged and the photographer was clearly treating the session as a genuine portrait assignment.

Khloe simply happened to be the model.

According to reports about the original session, the photoshoot lasted around three hours. That is a surprisingly long time for a dog portrait session, particularly when the subject is heavily pregnant. Yet Khloe apparently handled the experience well enough to produce the memorable photographs that later spread online.

The photos also captured something that ordinary snapshots often fail to convey: the anticipation surrounding the arrival of the puppies.

Khloe's rounded belly was impossible to miss.

Four puppies were on the way.

What Happens During a Dog's Pregnancy?

Although Khloe's photos are primarily a heartwarming story, her pregnancy also provides an opportunity to understand just how remarkable canine reproduction can be.

Dogs have relatively short pregnancies compared with humans. According to the Merck Veterinary Manual, canine pregnancy generally lasts around 62 to 64 days, although predicting the exact delivery date can be difficult because the date of breeding does not necessarily correspond with the date of conception.

Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine similarly notes that pregnancy in dogs lasts approximately two months, averaging about 63 days from ovulation.

That means an entire pregnancy — from early development to fully formed puppies ready to be born — takes place in only about two months.

During this relatively short period, the developing puppies undergo rapid changes.

Veterinary sources explain that pregnancy can be detected in different ways depending on how far along the dog is. Ultrasound can reliably identify pregnancy during the early stages, while X-rays later in pregnancy can be used to help determine the number of puppies. Merck notes that X-rays taken more than 55 days into pregnancy are particularly useful for determining litter size.

In Khloe's case, the family reportedly knew that four puppies were on the way, giving the maternity session an even more meaningful purpose.

The photos were not simply about showing a bigger belly.

They documented a very specific moment shortly before a major change in Khloe's life.

The Final Weeks Can Be Especially Important

For a pregnant dog, the final weeks of pregnancy are an important period because fetal growth accelerates.

According to the MSD Veterinary Manual, fetal growth is relatively limited during the first two-thirds of canine gestation, followed by substantial growth during the latter part of pregnancy. Nutritional requirements also increase during this period.

Pregnant dogs should receive appropriate nutrition rather than simply being given dramatically larger amounts of food from the beginning of pregnancy.

Veterinary guidance recommends transitioning pregnant dogs to a complete and balanced growth diet and increasing food intake during the final third of gestation according to the dog's condition and litter size.

This is an important distinction because pregnancy is not simply a matter of feeding an expectant dog as much as possible.
