The events leading up to April 2014 unfolded with the sudden, harrowing speed typical of the opioid crisis that has affected thousands of American families. Matthew was just 23 years old—a young man with his entire life ahead of him, beloved by his parents and community. When his life was cut short, his parents faced a crossroad that confronts thousands of families every year.According to data from organizations like the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), thousands of people die annually while waiting for organ transplants, while only a fraction of potential donors actually have their organs recovered due to lack of consent or timing constraints. In the darkest moment of their lives, Michael and Barbara chose a path of radical selflessness. They authorized the donation of Matthew’s organs through organizations like the Living Legacy Foundation.Medical teams worked swiftly. Matthew’s heart and liver were carefully prepared and transported to recipients in dire need. For Erv Basdon, the timing was a matter of survival. As noted in public accounts of the case, Erv was facing imminent organ failure. Without a successful transplant, his story would have ended on that same weekend. Instead, while the Shetterly family prepared to say their final earthly goodbyes to Matthew, Erv was wheeled into an operating room to receive the gift of continuation.
