Snake Bite: Don't Panic, Do the Following

If you or someone else is bitten by a snake, it is crucial to remain calm. Panic increases your heart rate, which causes the venom to spread faster through your body. Follow these steps immediately:

1. Move to Safety Immediately move away from the area where the bite occurred to avoid being bitten again. Do not try to catch or kill the snake.

2. Keep Calm and Restrict Movement Sit or lie down. Keep the bitten area still and position it at or below the level of the heart to slow down the spread of venom.

3. Call for Emergency Medical Help Call your local emergency services (like 911 or your local hospital) immediately. Even if you think the snake is non-venomous, medical evaluation is necessary.

4. Remove Tight Clothing and Jewelry Take off any rings, watches, bracelets, or tight clothing near the bite area, as severe swelling can occur quickly.

5. Clean the Wound Gently Wash the bite gently with clean water and soap. Do not scrub. Cover it loosely with a clean, dry bandage or cloth.

6. Remember the Snake's Appearance Try to remember the snake's color, shape, and patterns, or take a safe photo from a distance. This helps doctors identify the right antivenom.

What NOT to Do (Very Important):

  • DO NOT use a tourniquet or tie off the limb tightly.

  • DO NOT cut the wound or try to suck the venom out with your mouth.

  • DO NOT apply ice or submerge the wound in water.

  • DO NOT drink caffeine or alcohol, as they can speed up your body's absorption of the venom.

  • DO NOT use traditional herbs or unapproved home remedies.
