Snoop Dogg’s “Scoop Dogg” Joke Wasn’t Just a Joke: How an Old Ice Cream Dream Became Dr. Bombay

Over time, however, he became known for much more than recorded music.

He has worked in film, television, advertising, cooking, children’s entertainment, fashion, gaming and consumer products. He has published cookbooks, launched beverages and food products, appeared at major sporting events and developed an unexpected but highly successful public friendship with Martha Stewart.

TIME described him in 2025 as an entrepreneur whose businesses stretched across footwear, children’s programming, food, alcohol, fashion and entertainment. The profile also emphasized his preference for ownership and partnership rather than appearing as a temporary hired promoter.

That preference helps explain Dr. Bombay.

A standard endorsement would involve Snoop appearing in a commercial for someone else’s ice cream. The Dr. Bombay project instead positions him as a founder with influence over the brand’s identity, products and long-term direction.

The difference matters because celebrity endorsements can disappear as soon as a contract ends. A business built around intellectual property and ownership can continue expanding and generating value.

Snoop has spent decades turning his public personality into an adaptable brand. Ice cream may appear unrelated to rap, but it fits neatly within that larger strategy.

Why ice cream made sense for Snoop

Ice cream is also a natural match for Snoop’s modern image.

His early career was associated with provocative music, gangsta rap and adult themes. As he grew older, his public identity became broader and more approachable without completely abandoning its original character.

He developed a rare ability to remain credible to longtime hip-hop fans while also appearing in family television programs, cooking shows, mainstream commercials and major international events.

Ice cream exists comfortably between those audiences.

Children recognize it as a colorful treat. Adults connect it with comfort and nostalgia. Hip-hop fans can appreciate the flavor names and musical references. Retailers receive a product that is easier to sell nationally than merchandise aimed exclusively at one musical subculture.

Snoop has described ice cream as a way to relax rather than merely a snack. When discussing why he created the business, he recalled buying several brands and mixing different flavors because no single product delivered the combination he wanted.

His conclusion was characteristically direct: if someone needed to create the right mixture, it might as well be him.

That origin story makes the brand sound less like an arbitrary licensing arrangement. It connects the business with his personal habit of combining ice cream and sherbet to create stronger contrasts of sweetness, creaminess and fruit flavor.

Turning musical language into flavors

Dr. Bombay’s product design repeatedly borrows the language of music.

The company describes its desserts as “remixed” flavors. New products can be presented like singles, albums or remixes. The colorful combinations resemble musical collaborations in which separate ingredients maintain their identities while producing something new together.

This approach allows the brand to translate hip-hop culture without simply placing a rapper’s photograph on a carton.

For Snoop, the strategy is especially fitting. His career has depended on reinvention, collaboration and the ability to carry a recognizable style into unfamiliar settings.

A flavor such as Iced Out Orange Cream mixes vanilla-style creaminess with orange sherbet. Tropical Sherbet Swizzle emphasizes brighter fruit combinations. Baked Blueberry Muffin draws on the experience of eating a warm breakfast pastry but turns it into a frozen dessert.

The brand’s official site currently describes the products as moving between creamy, fruity, smooth and swirled textures.

The result is intended to feel like more than ordinary vanilla or chocolate with a celebrity name attached.

Whether every customer prefers those combinations is a matter of taste. But the creative relationship between Snoop’s musical identity and the flavors is clearly intentional.
