Sofía Vergara’s “Old Mom” Quote Is Real—but Joe Manganiello Disputed Her Explanation for Their Divorce

A widely shared social media graphic attributes a candid statement about motherhood and divorce to Sofía Vergara.

In the quote, Vergara says her younger husband wanted children while she did not want to become an “old mom.” She explains that she felt having another baby would not be fair to the child, says she was almost in menopause and describes herself as ready to become a grandmother rather than start motherhood again.

The quote is authentic.

Vergara made the remarks during an interview with the Spanish newspaper El País, published in January 2024. She was discussing the end of her marriage to actor Joe Manganiello after seven years.

However, the graphic presents only her account.

Several months later, Manganiello publicly disputed the idea that the marriage ended because he insisted on having children. He said the two had discussed the issue early in their relationship, had tried to start a family for a period of time and eventually divorced because they grew apart.

The accurate story therefore has two parts.

Vergara genuinely said she did not want to become a mother again at her age and believed their different positions on children contributed to the breakup.

Manganiello later said that explanation did not accurately capture why the marriage ended.

What Sofía Vergara Actually Said

Vergara spoke with El País while promoting Griselda, the crime drama in which she portrayed Colombian drug trafficker Griselda Blanco.

The interviewer asked where Vergara felt she was in her life, both professionally and personally.

Vergara described herself as fulfilled in her career and then addressed her recent divorce.

She said her marriage had ended because Manganiello was younger, wanted children and she did not want to become an older mother.

Vergara added that she respected women who made a different choice but did not believe beginning motherhood again was right for her.

She had already raised her son, Manolo, whom she gave birth to when she was 19. At the time of the interview, he was 32.

Vergara said she felt ready to be a grandmother rather than a mother again. She also remarked that she was approaching menopause and viewed that stage as part of the natural progression of her life.

The wording reproduced in the image substantially reflects the original interview.

The Quote Was About Her Own Choice

Vergara’s statement has sometimes been interpreted as criticism of women who have children later in life.

Her complete comments show that she framed the decision as personal.

She explicitly said she respected people who chose later motherhood. Her point was that she did not want it for herself.

That distinction matters.

Saying “this is not right for me” is different from saying “no woman should do this.”

Women reach decisions about parenthood based on health, relationships, finances, careers, family support, personal energy and individual values.

Vergara knew from experience how much responsibility raising a child requires. She decided she did not want to begin that process again in her fifties.

Her explanation did not require other women to make the same choice.

Vergara Had Already Raised a Son

Vergara became a mother as a teenager.

She shares Manolo with her first husband, Joe Gonzalez. Vergara and Gonzalez married when they were young and later divorced.

Vergara has spoken positively about her close relationship with her adult son. She has also acknowledged that becoming a mother so early meant that she and Manolo in some ways grew up together.

By the time her second marriage ended, she had spent more than three decades as a parent.

Her reference to being ready for grandmotherhood expresses a sense that she had completed one stage of life.
