For Vergara, another baby would not have been the beginning of motherhood. It would have meant returning to infancy, sleepless nights, school years and long-term daily responsibility after her first child had become an independent adult.
That context makes her statement more understandable than the isolated phrase “I didn’t want to be an old mom.”
Her Later Explanation to People
Vergara expanded on the subject in a 2024 interview with People.
She said some things can sound like good ideas in theory but may not be right in reality.
Having already been a mother, she understood the energy, time and sacrifice required to give a child proper care.
She acknowledged that reproductive medicine allows some women to have children at later ages. But she said that, considering her career, lifestyle and marriage, she did not believe she could give another child 100 percent.
Again, she emphasized that other women were entitled to choose differently.
Her reasoning combined age with practical responsibility. She was not merely saying that she physically could not have another child. She was saying she did not want to make a commitment she felt unable or unwilling to fulfill completely.
The Marriage and Divorce
Vergara and Manganiello began dating in 2014.
They became engaged later that year and married in Palm Beach, Florida, in November 2015.
For years, they appeared together at public events and frequently spoke warmly about one another.
In July 2023, the couple announced that they had made the difficult decision to divorce. Their public statement asked for privacy as they entered a new stage of their lives.
Manganiello filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences.
The process was completed in 2024. According to reporting based on court records, the two divided their property according to their prenuptial agreement and waived claims for spousal support.
There was no extended public courtroom fight comparable with many celebrity divorces.
The public disagreement came later, when each person described why the relationship ended.
Joe Manganiello’s Response
In July 2024, Manganiello addressed Vergara’s explanation in an interview with Men’s Journal.
He said the idea that their marriage ended because he demanded children was not true.
Manganiello acknowledged that he wanted a family. He said the couple had discussed the subject early in their relationship and had tried to have children during approximately the first year and a half.
According to him, he had promised Vergara that he would not leave if having children did not work out.
He objected to being portrayed as a man who experienced a midlife crisis and issued an ultimatum requiring his wife to undergo a potentially difficult physical process.
Manganiello said the marriage ended because the two people grew apart.
His response did not deny that children had been discussed or that he wanted them. Instead, he disputed Vergara’s characterization of that difference as the reason the marriage ended.
Can Both Accounts Contain Truth?
Divorces rarely have one cause understood identically by both people.
One spouse may view a disagreement as the central reason the relationship failed. The other may see the same disagreement as one issue within a broader process of emotional separation.
Vergara may sincerely believe their incompatible views about children revealed that their futures no longer aligned.
Manganiello may sincerely believe he had accepted that they might never have children and that the relationship ended because their emotional connection changed.
Those accounts are not identical, but they are not necessarily mutually exclusive in every detail.
A disagreement about children could contribute to two people growing apart without being the only cause of the divorce.
The public does not have access to the private conversations necessary to determine exactly how much weight the issue carried.
