Some people are only now realizing what the “WC” sign stands for on washrooms

Restrooms around the world are known by various names. In fact, some countries even have multiple terms for washrooms. Take the United Kingdom, for example, where public toilets are referred to in many different ways. Some call it a restroom, while others use the term loo. However, there are still many public toilets across the island nation marked with a WC sign, though not many people seem to truly know its meaning. This mystery would have remained unsolved if not for a TikTok user who responded to a follower's question about what WC stands for. The video, which garnered over 3,500 views, provided some valuable information for the rest of us.

The WC Toilet Sign – What Does It Mean?
In the TikTok video, the user explained, “Before indoor plumbing, we actually had a room for the bathtub, a bathroom, but the faucet was outside. You had to carry water in with a bucket, heat it up, and pour it into the tub. When indoor plumbing was introduced, there was already a room for the bath, so where would you put the toilet? The easiest place was in a closet, so that’s where it went.” The TikTok user then clarified that WC actually stands for "Water Closet."

This revelation sparked plenty of discussions, with many people expressing surprise—even though the WC sign has been around since the 1870s. One viewer wrote, "I’m so glad someone asked, I’ve been wondering about this for years but never bothered to Google it." Another user commented, "I can’t believe I’ve been seeing the WC sign everywhere and had no idea what it meant." A third user shared, "I was 23 when I finally realized WC stands for Water Closet." Some users were even more taken aback, with one person commenting, "I know what a water closet is, but I don’t use the term—I just say WC."

There were also users who were shocked that so many people around the world didn’t know the full form of the WC sign. One user remarked, "I’ve known this since I was 13!" While another joked, "I swear I live in LA because of the common sense levels in the UK, or the lack of them." A third user simply wrote, "What? Who doesn’t know this?"
