The Devereux Experience
As a teenager, Stallone was sent to Devereux Manor High School in Pennsylvania, a residential institution for young people with behavioral or emotional difficulties.
He has described the environment as oppressive and filled with adolescents who were emotionally damaged or highly volatile.
Staff members, in his recollection, frequently reinforced the idea that the students were failures.
At age 17, Stallone was sent to a punishment unit he characterized as a combination of a mental institution and solitary-confinement facility.
His descriptions include men in extreme distress and severely degrading conditions.
