It was the sudden loss of a father and grandfather.
His daughter later told ABC13 that the randomness of the attack was particularly frightening. If investigators were correct that Anderson and Fisher had no previous relationship, then the incident raised the unsettling possibility that Anderson had simply been in the wrong place at the wrong time.
His family wanted justice, but they also wanted him remembered for the person he had been rather than for the circumstances of his death.
The Arrest of Karon Fisher
The suspect was arrested on the same evening as the killing.
According to the Houston Police Department, witnesses provided information about Fisher's whereabouts, and officers detained her nearby before questioning her. She was subsequently charged with murder and taken to the Harris County Jail.
The original bond request was $2 million.
At the time, the combination of the surveillance footage, the apparent lack of a relationship between suspect and victim, and the extraordinary violence of the alleged attack made the case especially prominent in local media.
But the legal proceedings quickly became more complicated.
Fisher was not only facing the murder charge. Investigators and prosecutors also began examining what happened immediately after her arrest and during her detention.
According to court records reported by ABC13, Fisher was taken to a hospital following her arrest and allegedly assaulted a member of the medical staff. She later faced another charge after allegedly biting a jailer who was attempting to break up a fight inside the Harris County Jail.
These allegations were separate criminal matters and, like the murder charge itself, had to be resolved through the legal process.
Questions About the Suspect's Mental State
One of the most significant unanswered questions surrounding the case concerned Fisher's mental health and condition at the time of the attack.
During the investigation and bail proceedings, prosecutors and defense attorneys sought information from mental-health facilities and requested toxicology records.
ABC13 reported that there were indications of possible drug use and mental-health issues, prompting both sides to pursue medical information that might help explain Fisher's condition.
The distinction between explanation and legal defense is important.
A person's mental-health history does not, by itself, establish whether they are legally responsible for a crime. That determination belongs to the courts and can depend on evidence, medical evaluations and the specific legal standards applicable to the case.
Investigators therefore had to consider several questions.
What was Fisher's mental state on May 3?
Had she consumed drugs or other substances?
Was she experiencing a psychiatric crisis?
Had she shown warning signs before the attack?
And, perhaps most importantly, did any of those factors have a legally relevant connection to what prosecutors alleged she did?
At the time of the initial proceedings, authorities had not publicly provided a definitive answer.
A Troubling Background
Media reports also revealed that Fisher had previous encounters with the criminal justice system.
ABC13 reported that records showed Fisher had been placed on community supervision for five years following an evading-arrest case in 2023. Records also showed a 2021 prostitution charge that was later dismissed.
Those facts became part of the public discussion surrounding the case, particularly during the debate over bond.
But a previous arrest or dismissed charge does not establish that a person committed a later crime, nor does it explain why a particular homicide allegedly occurred.
That distinction is especially important in cases that receive intense media attention.
Once a horrifying crime becomes widely known, every detail about a suspect's past can appear connected to the present offense. Investigators and courts, however, must separate relevant evidence from background information that may have little or no bearing on the specific allegations.
In Fisher's case, the central question remained the same: what caused the attack on Anderson?
