But outsiders saw only part of the experience.
For Camilla, the pregnancy was happening every hour of every day.
As her belly grew, ordinary activities became increasingly difficult. Rest was essential, but comfortable sleep could be elusive. Her body carried an extraordinary physical burden, and even simple movements demanded more energy than before.
At night, she sometimes lay awake noticing movements from within.
A kick.
Then another movement from somewhere else.
Then another.
The sensations reminded her that what doctors discussed in medical terms was also deeply personal.
These were her children.
Loving Them While Being Afraid
One of the strangest emotional struggles of Camilla’s pregnancy involved something as simple as names.
For months, she hesitated to name the babies.
It was not because she did not love them.
It was precisely because she already did.
Naming each baby would make every child feel even more individual and real, and Camilla feared the emotional consequences if something went wrong.
It was a form of self-protection.
She understood, however, that emotional distance was almost impossible.
Every ultrasound made the babies more real. Every movement created another connection. Every day that passed gave Camilla and Matteo another reason to hope.
Fear and love existed side by side.
Matteo became Camilla’s constant source of support.
As the pregnancy placed increasing physical demands on her, he took on more responsibilities at home. He helped coordinate appointments, handled practical tasks and stayed close whenever anxiety became overwhelming.
They spoke about the future, but cautiously.
Sometimes they imagined what their home might look like with so many children.
Other times, they simply focused on getting through the next day.
When the future feels uncertain, reaching the next milestone can become a victory of its own.
The Night Everything Changed
Then, one night in early spring, Camilla woke with a sudden pain.
At first, she hoped it would pass.
It did not.
The contractions continued, and it quickly became clear that something significant was happening.
Matteo called for medical help.
The calm planning of the previous months suddenly became urgent reality.
The journey to the hospital seemed almost unreal to Camilla. There were lights, voices and hurried instructions. By the time she arrived, medical staff were already preparing for what they expected to be an exceptionally complicated delivery.
A birth involving so many babies required far more than the usual delivery team.
Multiple professionals would potentially be needed to care for the mother and newborns simultaneously. Everyone had a role, and preparation mattered.
Camilla was taken toward the operating area.
The bright lights, equipment and number of people in the room made the seriousness of the situation impossible to ignore.
This was the moment she had spent months imagining and fearing.
She could do little except trust the medical team.
Above everything else, she wanted her children to survive.
The First Cry
Then came a sound she would never forget.
A cry.
Small and delicate, but unmistakable.
The first baby had arrived.
For Camilla, that tiny sound cut through months of anxiety.
She cried.
There was little time to celebrate, however. The team continued working.
