Deep in the rainforests of Ecuador grows Socratea exorrhiza, a palm tree so peculiar that local guides and curious scientists alike have dubbed it the "walking tree." Much like the ancient Ents from The Lord of the Rings, this tree appears to have legs—thanks to its unusual root system. Although it can’t exactly go to war against orcs or storm castles, the Socratea exorrhiza does share an oddly lifelike mobility trait with its fictional cousins.

This rare palm species is known for its stilt-like roots that emerge several feet above the ground and spread outward like giant wooden tentacles. These roots not only stabilize the tree in the soft, shifting rainforest soil but are also believed—at least by some—to help the tree slowly migrate in search of better sunlight and more stable ground.

How Fast Do These Trees "Walk"?

According to some reports, these so-called walking trees can move about 2–3 centimeters per day, totaling up to 20 meters a year. While this may seem trivial in human terms, it’s a staggering distance in the world of trees, which are generally considered the epitome of stationary lifeforms.

Tourists visiting the Unesco-listed Sumaco Biosphere Reserve, located roughly a day’s journey from Quito, Ecuador’s capital, often hear guides narrate fascinating tales of the palm's wandering nature. The story goes that the tree gradually shifts location by growing new roots in the direction of sunlight while letting older roots die off behind it—thus propelling itself forward over time.

A Scientist’s View: Reality or Rainforest Myth?

Back in 1980, anthropologist John H. Bodley proposed that the tree’s stilted roots might allow it to slowly "walk" away from its original germination point. The idea captured the imagination of many and became a popular talking point among ecotourism guides.

Peter Vršanský, a palaeobiologist from the Slovak Academy of Sciences, who conducted fieldwork in Ecuador, elaborates on this theory. He explains that as the rainforest soil erodes, the tree may grow new roots into more solid areas, often up to 20 meters away. Over the course of several years, the tree subtly leans toward these new roots, while its older roots are left behind and die off—giving the illusion of movement.

“The process is incredibly slow,” Vršanský says, “but when viewed over years, it can seem as if the tree has migrated to a new spot entirely.”

Debunking the Myth: Not Everyone Agrees

However, not all scientists are convinced. In a 2005 study, biologist Gerardo Avalos, director of the Center for Sustainable Development Studies in Atenas, Costa Rica, challenged this walking-tree theory. After careful observation, Avalos concluded that Socratea exorrhiza does indeed grow new roots—but the tree itself remains firmly in place.

“My paper proves that the belief in the walking palm is just a myth,” Avalos told Live Science. “Thinking that a palm tree could track canopy light changes by physically moving over the forest floor is simply a tourist-friendly story, not a scientific reality.”

So, why the ongoing confusion? It largely comes down to appearances. The palm’s elevated, broom-like root system gives it a dynamic look that sets it apart from other trees. As some roots die and new ones sprout in different directions, the overall impression is one of slow but deliberate movement—even if the tree itself doesn’t actually budge from its spot.

A Fascinating Illusion Fueled by Storytelling

The Socratea exorrhiza's unique appearance is almost too compelling not to mythologize. In a lush environment where storytelling is part of the experience, guides have understandably leaned into the "walking tree" narrative to entertain visitors. It’s a captivating tale, especially in a world where people rarely think of trees as anything but still.

Moreover, no credible time-lapse footage has ever been published showing one of these trees "walking," which casts further doubt on the mobility theory. If such a video exists, it would certainly be a botanical sensation.

What About Other Mobile Plants?

While the walking palm may not truly move in the way some have claimed, it’s not entirely alone in the plant kingdom when it comes to mobility. The Creeping Devil cactus (Stenocereus eruca), found in Mexico, is one of the few plant species that genuinely travels across the ground. It does so by rooting at one end while the other end dies off, inching forward across the desert over time—a slow but undeniable crawl.
