They Tried to Break Him With a Slur—Jennifer Hudson Shares How Her Teen Son Faced the N-Word With Strength That Shocked Everyone
Jennifer Hudson’s Greatest Role: How Her Son’s Strength in the Face of Racism Redefined Her Legacy
Jennifer Hudson has built a remarkable legacy as an EGOT winner—earning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony—and as one of the most powerful vocalists and versatile actresses of her generation. But in a recent interview, Hudson revealed that her proudest role isn’t on stage or screen—it’s being a mother to her teenage son, David Daniel Otunga Jr. And it was David’s response to a painful and all-too-common experience that left Hudson stunned with pride and admiration.
A Moment That Revealed True Strength
In a candid conversation with Real Simple, Hudson shared how her son encountered the N-word—a slur meant to wound and diminish. Rather than reacting with anger or confusion, David met the moment with quiet dignity and unwavering self-assurance. “He’s very rooted in who he is and OK with that,” Hudson said, pointing to his confidence in wearing his afro proudly at his predominantly white school. “Just wearing your hair like that is a statement alone,” she added, highlighting how David’s self-expression is a reflection of his deep awareness of identity and history (Real Simple, 2023).
Hudson emphasized that this strength didn’t come by accident—it’s the result of years of intentional parenting, conversations about race, and exposure to cultural milestones. “Being a mom of a Black son, you have to make him conscious of and aware of certain things—who he is within the world. And there’s so many layers he has to learn,” she told PEOPLE (People, 2023).
A Parenting Philosophy Rooted in Responsibility and Empathy
Raising a Black teenage son in America comes with unique challenges, and Hudson has embraced the responsibility with resilience and compassion. At home, David is expected to contribute—keeping his room clean, staying on top of his studies, and demonstrating responsibility before earning independence. “The more responsible you show to be, then the more you’re allowed to do,” Hudson explained (People, 2023).
But her parenting goes far beyond chores and grades. Hudson has made it a priority to expose David and his peers to experiences that root them in heritage and empathy. Earlier this year, she brought David and his cousins to the first-ever Juneteenth ceremony at the White House, where she performed. “I told the guys, ‘When you all get old and have children, you’re going to say, ‘I was there for the first Juneteenth,’” she recalled (Real Simple, 2023).
Hudson also credits their shared love of animals with helping David develop emotional intelligence. Surrounded by pets, he has grown up with a deep respect for nature and wildlife—a cause Hudson champions through her work with Dawn’s conservation campaigns (HELLO! Magazine, 2025).
Balancing Stardom and Motherhood
Despite the demands of her career—from hosting The Jennifer Hudson Show, which recently earned 10 Daytime Emmy nominations, to her award-winning performances in film and music—Hudson remains deeply committed to creating a grounded, joyful environment for her son. “We can’t always hold their hand,” she told PEOPLE, acknowledging the challenge of letting go while trusting the values she’s instilled.
That trust means allowing David to manage his own social media presence and pursue his passions for basketball and music. It also means carving out family traditions like “Camp David,” concerts, and basketball games with his cousins—moments that foster connection and joy.
“He’s super tall,” Hudson joked in a recent interview. “People are like, ‘Who’s that man Jennifer’s with?’ And I’m like, ‘Y’all, that’s my son.’ That’s how much he’s grown” (HELLO! Magazine, 2025).
A Legacy of Love and Courage
What stands out most in Hudson’s reflections is her unwavering commitment to raising a son who meets the world not with fear, but with courage, compassion, and clarity. David’s ability to face racial hostility with confidence is not only a testament to his character but also to the guidance of a mother who has balanced fierce protection with the freedom to grow.
For Hudson, success isn’t measured solely by awards or accolades—it’s found in the resilience, empathy, and strength she sees in her son. By sharing their story, she offers inspiration to parents everywhere navigating the delicate balance of protecting their children while preparing them to thrive.
Jennifer Hudson may be a global icon, but in her son’s quiet strength, the world can see her greatest achievement.
