Sometimes a problem does not need an expensive repair, a long search for replacement parts, or weeks of planning.
Sometimes the solution simply drives past you on the road.
That is essentially what happened to Ford F-250 owner Dylan Meador, whose remarkably simple encounter with another truck owner turned an annoying cosmetic problem into an almost perfectly satisfying story.
It began with a used pickup truck.
Meador had recently purchased a 2001 Ford F-250. The truck itself was gold, but there was one detail that immediately stood out: its tailgate was silver.
According to Meador's account, a previous owner had replaced the original tailgate, leaving the truck with a part that worked but did not match the rest of the body.
Mechanically, that might not have been a major problem. A tailgate does not have to match the paint on the rest of a pickup to perform its basic job. But visually, it was impossible to miss.
A gold truck with a silver tailgate looked unfinished, almost as if the vehicle were still waiting for one final repair.
For an older working truck, however, mismatched body panels are hardly unimaginable. Pickups accumulate scratches, dents, repairs and replacement parts over years of use. Finding a replacement component in exactly the right color can be difficult, and repainting a perfectly functional panel simply for cosmetic reasons can mean spending money that an owner would rather put toward maintenance or more important repairs.
So Meador had a truck that was essentially fine, except for one stubbornly obvious mismatch.
Then, on what appeared to be an ordinary day, something extremely unlikely happened.
Meador said he was leaving a Verizon store when another Ford F-250 passed by.
At first, the sight of another pickup would hardly have been remarkable. Ford's F-Series trucks have been a major presence on American roads for decades, and older Super Duty models remain common in many parts of the country.
But this particular truck had one detail that immediately demanded Meador's attention.
It was silver.
And its tailgate was gold.
In other words, the stranger's truck had precisely the opposite cosmetic problem.
Meador had a gold F-250 with a silver tailgate.
The other driver had a silver F-250 with a gold tailgate.
It was as if someone had taken the correct tailgates from two trucks, switched them years earlier, sent the vehicles in different directions and then somehow arranged for them to cross paths again.
According to accounts of the encounter, Meador immediately went after the other truck and managed to catch up with its driver.
Imagine trying to explain the situation.
You have never met this person before. You have just seen their vehicle from the road. Yet within seconds you realize that the two of you possess exactly what the other person needs.
It sounds almost too convenient to be real.
But once the situation was explained, there was an obvious solution.
Swap the tailgates.
A Parking Lot Repair With an Almost Perfect Solution
The two drivers reportedly pulled into a nearby grocery store parking lot.
There was no need for an elaborate transaction.
Neither man needed to sell his tailgate and then hunt online for a replacement. Neither needed to schedule a trip to a body shop simply to have the panel repainted. There was no complicated negotiation over price.
Each driver already owned the other driver's solution.
So they removed the mismatched tailgates and traded them.
Meador's silver tailgate went onto the silver truck.
The other driver's gold tailgate went onto Meador's gold truck.
And just like that, both vehicles looked right.
Reporting on the viral story described photographs showing the trucks before and after the exchange. Before the swap, the vehicles looked almost like mirror images: one gold with a silver rear panel, the other silver with a gold one. Afterward, each truck had a tailgate that matched its body.
The solution was so straightforward that it almost feels like the ending of a carefully written comedy sketch.
