Coco apparently decided that she wanted no part in the adventure.
Rather than confront the intruder, she fled to a neighbour's house.
There is something undeniably funny about imagining the household cat abandoning her own home while the unexpected guest makes itself comfortable. In the familiar human version of this story, the homeowner might ask an intruder to leave. In Coco's version, the intruder arrived, and the homeowner simply moved out.
For a moment, the seal effectively won control of the living room without having to negotiate with anyone.
Still, Coco's reaction was understandable.
Animals may respond to unfamiliar situations with fear, avoidance, defensive behaviour, or attempts to escape. A cat faced with a larger and unfamiliar wild animal has no obligation to investigate it. Moving away from a potential threat can be a sensible response.
The important thing is that Coco was able to get away from the unexpected visitor.
Her escape also meant that the family would have to contend with a peculiar situation: their cat was missing from her own house, while a seal was occupying the space she had left behind.
It is easy to imagine the family initially searching for Coco, wondering where she had gone, before discovering the real reason she was no longer at home.
Some cats react dramatically when a new pet arrives. Others hide beneath beds or retreat to high shelves.
Coco apparently took the more decisive approach.
She found another house.
And Oscar, with no apparent understanding of the household drama unfolding around him, continued his exploration.
Oscar Explores the House Like He Owns It
Once inside, the young fur seal reportedly wandered through hallways and rooms before settling down on the family couch.
That detail is what transforms the incident from an unusual wildlife encounter into a story that sounds almost too funny to be true.
A seal in a house would already be surprising. A seal that enters through a cat flap is even more unexpected. But a seal that explores the home and then decides to relax on the sofa gives the entire episode the feeling of an unscripted comedy.
Oscar apparently did not rush around in a panic or immediately attempt to escape. Instead, he spent time exploring his surroundings.
For a young animal in an unfamiliar environment, investigation is not necessarily surprising. Animals use their senses to gather information about new places, and a house can contain a bewildering collection of smells, textures, sounds, and objects.
There were hallways to navigate, rooms to inspect, and furniture that Oscar had probably never encountered before.
The home might have offered a sheltered environment away from the immediate exposure of the coast. The sofa, in particular, may have provided a comfortable place to rest.
We cannot know exactly what Oscar was thinking. He was not consciously deciding to become a houseguest, and there is no evidence that he understood the social meaning of sitting on someone's couch.
Nevertheless, from the human perspective, his behaviour was wonderfully easy to interpret.
He had arrived without an invitation, frightened the resident cat, wandered around the property, and then made himself comfortable.
In other words, Oscar behaved like a guest who had misunderstood the purpose of a visit and decided to stay for the afternoon.
There is also something charming about the contrast between the animal's wild nature and the ordinary domestic setting. Fur seals belong in coastal environments, not living rooms filled with family furniture. Seeing one in such a familiar space makes the encounter feel almost surreal.
A sofa is an ordinary object to a person. To a young seal, it would have been an unfamiliar surface in an unfamiliar environment.
Perhaps it was soft. Perhaps it simply provided a convenient place to settle down.
Whatever attracted Oscar to the couch, the family had a story that would be difficult to top at their next gathering.
After all, not everyone can say that a wild seal once moved into their living room.
The Family Discovers Their Unexpected Houseguest
Finding an unfamiliar animal in your home would be startling under almost any circumstances.
Finding a seal would be a different experience altogether.
Imagine walking through your house expecting to see familiar furniture, everyday household objects, and perhaps a cat sleeping in her favourite spot. Instead, you discover a large, unfamiliar animal that clearly does not belong indoors.
There would probably be several questions racing through your mind.
How did it get in?
Is it injured?
Where is the cat?
And, perhaps most urgently, how are you supposed to get a seal out of your house?
For the Ross family, the situation was especially extraordinary because the animal had apparently entered without causing the sort of dramatic disturbance that might immediately alert everyone to its presence.
By the time the unusual visitor was discovered, Oscar had already had an opportunity to explore the house and settle on the sofa.
The family reportedly could hardly believe what they were seeing.
A seal is not the sort of animal most people expect to encounter beyond an aquarium, wildlife centre, or coastal habitat. Even people accustomed to living near the sea may be surprised when a marine mammal turns up inside their home.
Yet there was Oscar, occupying the living room as though he had been invited.
The situation also presented a practical problem. A wild seal is not a domestic pet, and attempting to handle one without the appropriate knowledge can be dangerous for both the animal and the people involved.
Seals are powerful wild animals. Although they may appear slow or awkward when moving on land, they can bite and may react defensively when frightened or cornered.
The family therefore contacted wildlife authorities for assistance.
That was the sensible decision. Rather than trying to carry Oscar outside or force him through the same entrance he had used, they sought help from people equipped to assess the situation and arrange for the animal's safe return to its natural environment.
In the meantime, the story acquired its most memorable detail.
The seal needed a name.
And so, the unexpected guest became Oscar.
Meet Oscar, the Seal Who Never Paid Rent
Giving an animal a name is a familiar human response to an unusual encounter.
A name makes an unfamiliar visitor easier to talk about and gives the story a little personality. Instead of referring repeatedly to an unidentified seal in the living room, the family could tell friends and neighbours about Oscar.
The nickname also made the situation sound even more like a domestic comedy.
Oscar had not arrived with a suitcase, introduced himself, or explained why he was visiting. He had simply appeared, explored the house, and taken advantage of the available furniture.
