47-Year-Old Man Dies of Liver Cancer: ‘2 Pains and 2 Itches’ Could Be Warning Signs of Liver Disease

The sudden death of a 47-year-old man due to liver cancer has once again highlighted the silent but deadly nature of liver disease. Known for showing minimal symptoms in its early stages, liver cancer often develops quietly until it reaches an advanced stage—when treatment becomes difficult and prognosis grim. In this tragic case, doctors later pointed out that the man had exhibited early warning signs that went unnoticed: what they called the “2 pains and 2 itches.”

Liver cancer, particularly hepatocellular carcinoma, is one of the most dangerous and fast-growing cancers in the world. It often stems from underlying liver conditions such as hepatitis B or C, fatty liver disease, or long-term alcohol abuse. In many cases, patients are unaware they have a liver problem until it’s too late, because the liver is a “silent” organ that rarely causes pain in the early stages of disease.

The man in question, whose name was not disclosed for privacy reasons, had been living an average, busy life. He was a manager at a small company, a father of two, and believed he was in fairly good health. He did suffer from fatigue, mild discomfort in his abdomen, and occasional itching on his skin, but he dismissed these as signs of stress or age.

By the time he went to the hospital due to severe pain and yellowing of the eyes, imaging tests revealed an aggressive tumor that had already spread throughout the liver. Despite efforts to treat the condition, he passed away just a few months after diagnosis.

Doctors reviewing the case emphasized four warning signs they now encourage the public to watch for—known as the “2 pains and 2 itches”:

1. Pain in the Upper Right Abdomen:
This is where the liver is located. Persistent discomfort, a dull ache, or a feeling of fullness in the upper right side of the belly may indicate inflammation or tumor growth in the liver.

2. Pain in the Right Shoulder or Back:
Liver-related pain can sometimes radiate to the shoulder or back due to shared nerve pathways. This pain is often misdiagnosed as muscular or orthopedic problems.

3. Itchy Skin (Pruritus):
As liver function declines, bile salts can accumulate in the bloodstream, leading to systemic itching—especially on the hands, feet, and back. This can happen even before visible jaundice appears.

4. Itchy Red Palms (Palmar Erythema):
This is a lesser-known symptom where the palms become red and itchy due to hormonal and blood flow changes caused by liver dysfunction.

The combination of these symptoms may not seem alarming individually, but together they can point to liver disease in its early stages. Unfortunately, many people ignore these signs or self-diagnose using home remedies, losing precious time that could be used for early detection and treatment.

Health experts strongly recommend regular liver function tests for those at higher risk: people over 40, those with a history of hepatitis, alcohol abuse, obesity, or a family history of liver disease. Blood tests, ultrasounds, and fibroscans can detect liver problems before symptoms appear.

Liver cancer doesn’t announce itself with dramatic symptoms until the final stages. That's why awareness and early detection are crucial. The tragic story of this 47-year-old man serves as a painful reminder that our bodies often whisper before they scream.

If you experience unexplained pain or persistent itching—especially if accompanied by fatigue, yellowing of the eyes, or changes in appetite—don’t ignore it. See a doctor. It could save your life.
