5 Effective Ways to Clean Rust, Grease, and Stubborn Stains from Your Gas Stove—Making It Shine Like New
After a long period of use, your gas stove can easily develop rust stains, grease buildup, and a dull appearance that makes your entire kitchen look untidy. From my own experience, it only takes two days of cooking without cleaning for the stove to become sticky and grimy again.
There was even a time when I was away for a month on a business trip, leaving the kitchen to my husband and kids. When I came back and saw the stove, I was speechless—rust spots, grease everywhere, and dishes piled up. My first thought was, “This stove is ruined… maybe I should just buy a new one.”
Fortunately, right at that moment, my neighbor stopped by. After hearing my misery, she shared an article she found online about how to clean a rusted gas stove effectively. And it worked so well that I’m sharing these tips here—because I know many of you might need them too.
1. Use Baking Soda
Baking soda is one of the most effective and gentle cleaning agents for removing rust, sticky grease, and stains on your stove surface and glass top.
Step 1: Wipe the stove surface and glass top with warm soapy water.
Step 2: Mix baking soda with water in a 1:1 ratio to form a paste. Apply the mixture evenly onto rusty or greasy areas and let it sit for 20 minutes.
Step 3: Use a soft sponge or microfiber cloth to scrub and wipe clean.
Tip:
For extra stubborn stains, sprinkle a bit of dry baking soda on top of the paste and scrub gently—it boosts cleaning power without scratching the surface.
2. Use Vinegar
Vinegar is acidic, which helps dissolve grease, eliminate rust residue, and disinfect the stove.
Step 1: Spray vinegar directly onto the stove and glass surface. Let it sit for 15 minutes.
Step 2: Wipe repeatedly with a damp soft cloth until the surface becomes shiny and clean.
Bonus Tip:
Warm the vinegar slightly before spraying—it increases its degreasing ability and removes smells at the same time.
3. Use Fresh Lemon
Lemon contains natural citric acid and essential oils that effectively break down grease and brighten the metal surface.
Step 1: Cut a lemon in half and rub each half directly onto greasy or rusted areas. Leave the juice on the surface for 15 minutes.
Step 2: Wipe off with a damp soft cloth several times until fully clean.
Extra Benefit:
Lemon also leaves a refreshing scent and helps kill bacteria—great for keeping your kitchen smelling fresh.
4. Use Baking Powder
Baking powder contains chemical components that naturally dissolve grease without damaging the stove surface.
Step 1: Dampen a sponge, then sprinkle baking powder over it.
Step 2: Scrub the stove’s surface firmly a few times, focusing on greasy spots.
Step 3: Wipe clean with a damp cloth until all residue is removed.
Tip:
For gas burners, brushing those parts with a soft brush dipped in baking powder can help remove soot and burnt stains effectively.
5. Combine Heat + Soap for Tough Stains (Bonus Method Added)
For stains that have been sitting too long, using mild heat can make cleaning easier.
Step 1: Heat a small pot of water on the stove for 2–3 minutes to soften accumulated grease.
Step 2: Turn off the stove and apply dish soap or a degreaser while the surface is still warm.
Step 3: Scrub lightly, then wipe with a damp cloth.
This method helps loosen thick layers of grease without using harsh chemicals.
Final Thoughts
Cleaning a rusted, greasy gas stove doesn't have to be stressful or expensive. With simple household ingredients like baking soda, vinegar, lemon, and baking powder, you can restore your stove to a shiny, like-new condition.
Regular cleaning after each cooking session will help prevent buildup, protect the stove surface, and keep your kitchen spotless and inviting.
