‘Boy Meets World’ Star Will Friedle Reveals Terrifying Health Scare After Waking Up to Blood

For millions of television viewers, Will Friedle will always be remembered as the effortlessly funny Eric Matthews—the older brother whose unpredictable energy helped make Boy Meets World one of the most beloved family sitcoms of the 1990s.

But a recent morning brought the 50-year-old actor and podcaster a kind of shock that had nothing to do with comedy.

Friedle revealed that he was taken to the hospital after waking up and discovering a significant amount of blood in his urine. Speaking on the October 8 episode of Pod Meets World, the rewatch podcast he co-hosts with former castmates Danielle Fishel and Rider Strong, Friedle described the frightening moment with the mixture of honesty and humor longtime fans have come to expect from him.

“I woke up badly peeing blood,” he said.

Although the actor was eventually diagnosed with a kidney stone, the first moments of the ordeal were filled with uncertainty. Friedle did not yet know whether the cause was relatively manageable or potentially much more serious.

His story is both a startling celebrity health update and a reminder that an alarming physical symptom should never be ignored.

A Normal Morning Suddenly Became an Emergency

Friedle said the incident happened on a Saturday. What should have been an ordinary trip to the bathroom immediately turned into something terrifying.

He described the experience as a moment in which it felt as though “something inside me is horribly broken.”

That reaction is understandable. Visible blood in the urine can be deeply alarming, especially when it appears suddenly and without a known explanation.

Friedle’s wife, Susan Martens, reportedly recognized immediately that something was wrong when he emerged from the bathroom. According to the actor, she noticed that the color had drained from his face.

He knew he needed medical attention and went to the hospital rather than waiting to see whether the symptom would disappear.

Friedle’s account was published by both PEOPLE and Entertainment Weekly, with the outlets reporting the same central details: the sudden appearance of blood, the hospital visit, the CT scan and the eventual kidney-stone diagnosis.

That consistency is important because celebrity health stories can easily become exaggerated as they move across social media. In this case, however, the account came directly from Friedle during his own podcast.

Why Blood in the Urine Demands Attention

Blood in the urine is medically known as hematuria.

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases distinguishes between two broad forms. Gross hematuria is blood that can be seen, while microscopic hematuria is detected only through a laboratory urine test.

Even a relatively small amount of blood can noticeably change the color of urine. Possible causes range from infections and urinary-tract stones to inflammation, trauma, kidney disease and other conditions. Because the causes vary so widely, the symptom alone cannot tell someone what is wrong.

The NIDDK advises people to see a healthcare professional promptly when they experience possible kidney-stone symptoms such as blood in the urine, sharp pain, difficulty urinating, cloudy urine, fever or chills.

Friedle therefore made the appropriate decision by going to the hospital instead of attempting to diagnose the problem himself.

His eventual diagnosis may have been less frightening than some of the possibilities that initially crossed his mind, but it could only be established after a medical evaluation.

The CT Scan Provided an Answer

According to Entertainment Weekly, Friedle underwent a CT scan at the hospital. Doctors determined that a kidney stone was responsible for the bleeding.
