Denzel Washington’s ‘Othello’ Makes Broadway History as Highest-Grossing Play Ever
Denzel Washington’s “Othello” Revival Breaks Broadway Records Before Opening Night
It’s a full-circle Broadway triumph for Denzel Washington—one that bridges legacy, artistry, and history.
The much-anticipated revival of Othello, starring Academy Award winner Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, has already made Broadway history, becoming the highest-grossing play ever before even reaching its official opening night (Deadline).

Directed by Tony Award–winner Kenny Leon, the Shakespearean tragedy earned a record-breaking $2,818,297 in its first full week of previews at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, surpassing the previous benchmark set by Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. The demand for tickets has been nothing short of phenomenal—with performances sold out and premium seats fetching upwards of $1,000 each (The New York Times).
Leon, who has long collaborated with Washington, described the project as “a dream realized,” combining “the soul of Shakespeare with the heart of Black storytelling.” Washington’s Othello and Gyllenhaal’s Iago have been praised for their “electric chemistry and emotional precision,” creating a modern energy that bridges 17th-century text with 21st-century urgency (Variety).
A Legendary Partnership Reunited
This is more than a theatrical moment—it’s a reunion of creative giants. Washington and Leon previously collaborated on the Tony Award–winning revival of Fences (2010) and A Raisin in the Sun (2014), both of which earned critical acclaim for re-centering Black experiences in classic American theater.
The actor last appeared on Broadway in 2018’s The Iceman Cometh, also to critical praise (The Guardian). Now, after nearly five decades since his stage debut, Washington returns to the role that shaped his early career. In interviews, he’s reflected that Othello was one of the first plays that challenged him as a young actor—an experience that “taught me the power of voice, vulnerability, and control.”
The production also benefits from the influence of producers Kandi Burruss and Todd Tucker, who joined the team in 2024 (Playbill). Burruss, an entertainment mogul and Broadway producer behind The Wiz and Thoughts of a Colored Man, emphasized that the goal is to ensure “Black artistry is not only seen but celebrated on the world’s biggest stages.”
Reimagining a Classic for the Modern Stage
The 2025 revival marks the first Broadway production of Othello since 1982, when the legendary James Earl Jones took the lead. This new staging seeks to reinterpret the story through a contemporary lens—one that explores race, jealousy, and identity in ways that resonate with today’s audiences.
Joining Washington and Gyllenhaal is rising West End star Molly Osborne as Desdemona, whose performance has been described as “achingly modern yet deeply faithful to Shakespeare’s poetry” (The Telegraph). The production design—minimalist, shadow-drenched, and scored by live percussion—intentionally blurs the line between Elizabethan and modern aesthetics, reinforcing the play’s timeless themes.
Leon has stated that the creative team wanted Othello to feel “alive and political.” He noted, “When Denzel steps onto that stage, it’s not just Othello you see—it’s every Black man who’s ever had his worth questioned and his loyalty doubted” (Los Angeles Times).
A Cultural Event, Not Just a Play
Othello officially opens on March 23 for a limited engagement through June 8, but it’s already being hailed as Broadway’s defining event of the decade. Critics predict the show will be a leading contender for multiple Tony Awards, including Best Revival and Best Actor (Variety).
For Washington, who began his career in theatre at the New York Shakespeare Festival in 1977, this return to the stage marks a poignant milestone. “It feels like coming home,” he told The New York Times. “The stage gave me everything—discipline, humility, and the courage to fail.”
With sold-out previews and an unmatched star roster, this Othello revival reaffirms that Shakespeare’s words—when placed in the right hands—remain as alive and revolutionary as ever. It’s a rare fusion of legacy and innovation, where Black excellence takes center stage not as exception, but as standard.
A Legacy Sealed in the Spotlight
Whether this becomes one of Washington’s final stage appearances remains uncertain. But what is clear is that the Othello revival cements his position as one of the greatest American actors to ever bridge film and theater. As Deadline aptly noted, “Washington doesn’t just perform Shakespeare—he redefines him.”
For those lucky enough to secure a seat, Othello isn’t merely a play. It’s a cultural reckoning—a meditation on love, envy, race, and power that will echo long after the curtain falls.
Because when Denzel Washington speaks, the world listens—and Broadway rises to meet him.
