‘Jealousy Is a Powerful Emotion’: Cam Newton Says Drake Maye Is Not Top 5 QB. Patriots Fans Accuse Cam Of Hating Because He Failed To Replace Tom Brady
Drake Maye’s Meteoric Rise: Patriots’ Young Star Rekindles Brady-Era Glory Amid Top-5 Debate
The New England Patriots may have finally found their heir to Tom Brady. Second-year quarterback Drake Maye is rapidly ascending into superstardom, and even veteran analysts can’t stop talking about it.
During a recent episode of ESPN’s First Take, former Patriots lineman Damien Woody praised Maye’s poise, accuracy, and leadership, declaring that the young quarterback is “playing like a top-five QB in the league right now” (ESPN). That comment sparked a spirited debate with former Patriots quarterback Cam Newton, who wasn’t ready to anoint Maye among the NFL’s elite just yet.
A Historic Performance and Record-Breaking Efficiency
Maye’s latest outing certainly gave analysts plenty to discuss. In a dominant 31–13 victory over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, the 23-year-old quarterback put together a statistical masterpiece. He completed 21 of 23 passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns, finishing with a 135.9 passer rating before taking a well-earned rest in the fourth quarter.
According to FOX Sports Research, Maye became the first quarterback in the Super Bowl era to complete at least 90% of his passes, throw for more than 200 yards, and rush for over 50 yards in a single game. His 91.3% completion rate also marked the highest in Patriots history among quarterbacks with 20 or more attempts—better than even Brady’s best single-game efficiency.
“He’s showing everything you want to see in a franchise quarterback—control, confidence, and calm under pressure,” Woody said on First Take. “This kid’s the real deal.”
Cam Newton Pushes Back: “Let’s Pump the Brakes”
Newton, however, wasn’t buying the hype—at least not yet.
“Top five in the NFL? You trippin’, son,” Newton responded with a laugh. “Is he playing good football? Absolutely. But top five? That’s heavy. This was against the Tennessee Titans, not the Bills or the Ravens. Let’s see him do it consistently against elite competition.” (Bleacher Report)
While Newton’s skepticism might seem harsh, some analysts agree that consistency and competition matter. As The Athletic noted, Maye has benefited from a favorable early-season schedule, facing defenses that rank near the bottom in takeaways and passing yards allowed. Still, his command of the offense and efficiency cannot be ignored.
Patriots Fans Defend Their New Star — and Call Out Cam
Patriots fans weren’t having any of Newton’s critique. Many took to social media, accusing the former MVP of “jealousy” after his brief and turbulent 2020 stint with the Patriots ended in disappointment.
“Cam Newton got cut by New England—they chose Mac Jones instead,” one fan posted on X (formerly Twitter). “You can understand why he’s salty.”
Others pointed out the irony of Newton criticizing a player who once called him his childhood hero. “Maye literally said Cam was his favorite quarterback growing up,” another fan replied. “You’d think he’d be proud instead of petty.”
Even some neutral analysts sided with Woody, saying the excitement around Maye is justified. “Drake Maye’s mechanics, mobility, and decision-making are elite for a second-year player,” wrote NBC Sports. “He’s not just winning games—he’s changing the way the Patriots play football.”
From Draft Hope to Franchise Savior
When New England selected Maye with the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, expectations were sky-high. The franchise had struggled to replace Brady’s magic, cycling through Cam Newton, Mac Jones, and Bailey Zappe in search of a long-term answer.
After a rocky rebuilding year under Jerod Mayo, new head coach Mike Vrabel took over in January 2025, reshaping the team’s identity. Under Vrabel’s system, Maye has thrived, leading the Patriots to a 5–2 record and first place in the AFC East entering Monday Night Football (Boston Globe).
Maye’s leadership has brought back a sense of discipline and swagger that Foxborough hasn’t felt in years. “He’s not just managing games—he’s dictating them,” said NFL Network analyst Kurt Warner. “That’s the mark of a franchise quarterback.”
The Broader Debate: Is Maye Really Top 5?
So, where does Maye truly rank among today’s quarterbacks? It’s hard to place him above generational talents like Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, or Joe Burrow (when healthy). But beyond that elite trio, the race tightens considerably.
With Josh Allen struggling through turnover issues, Jalen Hurts facing criticism for regression, and Justin Herbert inconsistent, Maye’s rapid rise has vaulted him into the conversation. His numbers—among the league’s best in completion percentage and touchdown-to-interception ratio—suggest he’s already performing at a top-tier level (Pro Football Focus).
“He’s somewhere in that 6-to-8 range,” wrote The Ringer. “But trajectory-wise, he’s climbing faster than anyone expected.”
A Return to the Patriots’ Golden Standard
Beyond the stats and debates, Maye has reenergized a proud fan base long starved for stability. The Patriots are chasing their first AFC East title since the Brady–Belichick era, and Maye’s calm command under pressure is drawing inevitable comparisons to the GOAT himself.
“Drake brings back that same sense of inevitability,” said a longtime Patriots fan outside Gillette Stadium. “You just feel like we’re never out of a game again.”
As ESPN summed up, “Maye’s success represents more than a hot streak—it’s the rebirth of a dynasty mindset in New England.”
The Road Ahead
If Maye keeps up this level of play, the Patriots could be legitimate contenders come January. For now, the young quarterback is staying humble amid the noise.
“I’m just focused on winning games,” Maye told reporters postgame (NFL.com). “Records and rankings don’t mean anything unless we finish strong.”
Whether or not he’s already a “top five” quarterback may still be up for debate—but one thing’s clear: Drake Maye has brought belief back to Foxborough. And that alone is a victory Patriots Nation desperately needed.
