On what began as an ordinary afternoon, 18-year-old Justin Gavin was walking down a local street when he noticed a small SUV engulfed in flames driving past. He immediately saw a terrified little girl peering out of the back window. Other drivers on the road began honking their horns and getting out of their cars to warn the mother of the fire, but the vehicle kept moving — the flames spreading fast.

“When I saw the car coming down the street, I noticed fire underneath it,” Gavin recalled in an interview with WFSB. “I started yelling, ‘Stop the car! Your car is on fire!’ I just felt like if I was in that situation, I would want somebody to help me out. My instincts just took over.”

A Selfless Act of Courage

Realizing the driver could not stop in time, Gavin sprinted toward the vehicle. Once it finally came to a halt, he rushed to open the driver’s door and pull the woman out. Then, without hesitation, he turned his attention to the three children — ages 1, 4, and 9 — helping each one safely escape the vehicle as the flames grew more intense (ABC News).

“It kind of got scary because I didn’t know whether I was going to be able to get everyone out in time,” Gavin said. “And luckily, I did.”

Just moments later, the SUV was completely engulfed in flames, according to witnesses and local authorities (NBC News). Had Gavin arrived even a few seconds later, the outcome could have been tragically different.

Honored by Police for His Heroism

The Waterbury Police Department later honored Gavin for his bravery, presenting him with a challenge coin — a symbol of recognition typically reserved for acts of extraordinary courage.

Police Chief Fernando Spagnolo personally awarded Gavin the coin, praising his quick action and selflessness. “I hope that when you have that coin, it reminds you of this day,” Spagnolo told him. “You can look back and reflect on all the good that came out of this — not only for you, but for the family you saved.” (CNN)

Photos released by the Waterbury Police Department show Gavin smiling humbly as he accepted the honor.

A Moment That Changed His Life

The young hero said the entire experience gave him a new perspective on life. “It made me realize life is short,” Gavin told WFSB. “That coin symbolizes bravery and courage. The police chief told me that whenever I feel like I need some courage, or some type of strength, I should look back at that coin and think of that day.”

According to The Hartford Courant, Gavin’s selfless act has inspired many in his community, with several local organizations reaching out to honor him. One resident even called him “a guardian angel sent at the right moment.”

A Lesson in Humanity

Stories like Gavin’s serve as reminders that acts of courage can come from anyone — regardless of age or background. His quick thinking and bravery saved an entire family from what could have been a devastating tragedy.

As ABC News reported, the mother and her children are safe and deeply grateful for Gavin’s actions. The local police department has since shared the story widely on social media, hoping his bravery will encourage others to act when faced with danger.

In a world often filled with headlines about conflict and division, Gavin’s instinctive heroism stands out as a bright example of compassion and humanity in action.

“Others were honking and shouting, but he ran toward the fire,” one witness told NBC Connecticut. “That’s not something everyone would do. He didn’t hesitate — he just helped.”

A True Community Hero

Now, with national outlets sharing his story, Gavin says he’s simply grateful that he was in the right place at the right time. “If I ever see anyone in trouble again,” he said, “I’ll always try to help — that’s just what you should do.”

Thank you for your bravery and quick thinking, Justin Gavin — your courage has not only saved lives but also inspired an entire community to believe in the power of doing good.
