LeBron James Turns the Classroom into a Racetrack: I PROMISE Student Gets the NASCAR Experience of a Lifetime
LeBron James has always believed that education doesn’t stop when the school bell rings — it continues wherever curiosity leads. Known for empowering students to dream beyond the classroom, the NBA superstar and philanthropist just helped one of his I PROMISE students take learning to a whole new level — this time, on the racetrack.

Through the LeBron James Family Foundation’s I PROMISE program, a student named CeCe was given the chance to shadow a professional NASCAR pit crew at the Ally 400 in Nashville, one of the sport’s premier events. The once-in-a-lifetime experience was part of LeBron’s ongoing mission to expose Akron students to career paths and environments they might never otherwise see (source: USA Today).
The I PROMISE program, founded in partnership with the Akron Public School District, serves more than 1,600 students and their families, providing not just academic support but also food, housing assistance, mental health services, and career development opportunities (source: Akron Beacon Journal). From coding labs to law firm visits, LeBron’s team has always emphasized “real-world learning” — and this latest NASCAR experience took that philosophy into high gear.
At the Ally 400, CeCe received an all-access tour of the Nashville Superspeedway. He met drivers, engineers, and crew chiefs, watched live pit-stop simulations, and even got to test out the communication headsets used by mechanics and strategists on race day. According to the LeBron James Family Foundation, the goal of the visit was to “show what teamwork, precision, and focus look like at 200 miles per hour” (source: LeBronJamesFamilyFoundation.org).
In the video shared by the Foundation, CeCe’s face beams with excitement as he walks through the pit lane and sees the roaring cars up close. “It’s an honor and a blessing,” he says, his voice filled with awe and gratitude. For him, this wasn’t just a fun trip — it was a door opening to a world of engineering, sports management, and technology that once felt out of reach.
LeBron’s commitment to creating these moments goes far beyond celebrity philanthropy. It’s about reimagining what opportunity looks like for kids who rarely get to see themselves reflected in spaces like professional motorsports. As Sports Illustrated noted, “LeBron James isn’t just changing lives in Akron — he’s redefining what community investment looks like for athletes worldwide” (source: Sports Illustrated).
Moments like CeCe’s are powerful reminders that when young Black students are seen, supported, and given access, they don’t just dream — they discover. “This is what it’s all about,” LeBron once said of his education initiatives. “Opening doors that were never open for us when we were kids” (source: ESPN).
Through programs like I PROMISE, those doors are no longer just open — they’re wide, welcoming, and full of possibilities. And for CeCe, the path to his future dreams might just start with the sound of engines roaring on a summer day in Nashville.
