A Photograph Taken 11 Years Before They Met Revealed an Extraordinary Coincidence in a Married Couple’s Love Story

Sometimes an old photograph preserves far more than the moment we intended to capture.

A family vacation picture might contain a building that disappeared years later. A childhood photograph might preserve the face of someone we have almost forgotten. A stranger standing unnoticed in the background may never mean anything to us at all.

But for one married couple in China, a photograph taken during a summer vacation eventually revealed an extraordinary coincidence.

Long before they became husband and wife, long before they fell in love, and even before they knew the other person existed, Xue and Ye had apparently stood only several meters apart.

It happened in July 2000 at May Fourth Square in Qingdao, a seaside city in eastern China.

Xue was posing for a photograph.

Some distance behind her, another young visitor was also posing for a completely separate camera.

That visitor was Ye.

Neither noticed the other.

They were strangers sharing the same public space for only a brief moment before continuing with their separate lives.

Eleven years later, they would finally meet.

They would fall in love, marry and become parents to twin daughters.

And years after their marriage, a forgotten photograph would reveal that their paths had crossed once before.

A Summer Day in Qingdao

In July 2000, neither Xue nor Ye had any reason to believe that their visit to Qingdao would eventually become part of a love story.

Both were young visitors to the city.

According to reports published when their story became internationally known in 2018, Xue had traveled to Qingdao with her mother. Her mother had undergone surgery several months earlier, and the trip was intended as an opportunity to relax and recover.

Ye arrived under completely different circumstances.

His mother had originally booked a place on a tour but reportedly developed appendicitis and could no longer make the journey. Ye went in her place.

It was a seemingly ordinary change of plans.

Had his mother been able to travel as expected, Ye might never have been standing in May Fourth Square at precisely that moment.

Xue and Ye therefore arrived in Qingdao independently, for unrelated reasons, with no connection to each other.

Their paths converged at one of the city's recognizable landmarks.

May Fourth Square is a major public space in Qingdao, recognizable for its large red sculpture. Like countless tourists before and after them, both visitors wanted photographs of themselves there.

Ye was several meters away, posing for another camera.

And through an accident of timing and perspective, Ye appeared in the background of Xue's photograph.

No one involved seems to have considered the background figure important.

Why would they?

To Xue, he was simply another tourist.

To Ye, Xue was another stranger somewhere in a busy public square.

The photograph was taken, placed among other vacation memories, and eventually stored away.

The two left Qingdao and returned to their separate lives.

Neither knew that the camera had preserved their first near-encounter.

Eleven Years Passed

Life continued.

The year 2000 became 2001, then 2005, then 2010.

The old vacation photograph remained in a family album.

During those years, Xue and Ye were not building a relationship. They were simply two people living their own lives.

Then, in 2011, their paths crossed again — this time in a way that actually mattered.

According to contemporary reporting, they met in Chengdu after being introduced through friends.

This meeting was very different from their first accidental encounter.

This time, they noticed each other.

They began a relationship, fell in love and eventually married.

The couple later became parents to twin daughters.

Their lives were now deeply connected.

Yet neither apparently knew that an old photograph sitting in a family collection contained evidence that they had once been in exactly the same place at the same time.
