Most People Get This Wrong — Here’s How Often You Should Refresh Everything
In our busy lives, it’s easy to forget how often everyday household items actually need to be cleaned or replaced. Many of us use things far longer than we should, which can lead to hygiene issues, reduced efficiency, and even health problems. The truth is, every item in your home has its own ideal refresh schedule — and following it can make your environment cleaner, healthier, and much more comfortable.
Here’s your simple guide to exactly how often you should refresh the items you use daily.
1. Bedding — Refresh Weekly
Your sheets and pillowcases collect sweat, body oils, and dead skin cells — the perfect breeding ground for dust mites.
Wash bedding once a week in hot water (at least 130°F / 54°C) to kill mites and remove allergens.
2. Towels — Refresh Every 3 Days
Damp towels grow bacteria fast.
-
Bath towels: every 3 days
-
Hand towels: even more often, especially in shared bathrooms
Use hot water to fully sanitize them.
3. Curtains — Refresh Every 6 Months
Curtains trap dust, odors, and allergens.
Wash or dry-clean them twice a year.
Use a gentle, cold cycle for machine-washable fabrics; delicate or heavy curtains may need professional cleaning.
4. Pillows — Refresh Every 1–2 Years
Pillows hold dust mites, bacteria, and even mold. Replace them every 1–2 years, depending on material and use.
In between, wash pillows every 3–6 months, following care instructions.
5. Toothbrush — Refresh Every 3 Months
Dentists recommend replacing your toothbrush every 3 months, or sooner if bristles fray.
If you’ve been sick, replace it immediately to avoid reinfection.
6. Kitchen Sponges — Refresh Weekly
Sponges are one of the dirtiest items in your home. Replace them every week.
To sanitize between uses:
-
Microwave damp sponge for 1 minute, or
-
Soak in a bleach solution for 5 minutes
7. Air Filters — Refresh Every 3 Months
Dirty HVAC filters reduce airflow and worsen indoor air quality.
Change them every 3 months, or more often if you have allergies or pets.
8. Makeup Brushes — Refresh Every Month
Brushes collect oils, bacteria, and product buildup — leading to breakouts.
Wash them once a month with a gentle cleanser and allow them to air-dry completely.
9. Refrigerator — Deep Clean Every 3 Months
A clean refrigerator protects your food and health.
Every 3 months:
-
Empty the fridge
-
Wash shelves, drawers, and surfaces with warm soapy water
-
Wipe door seals and exterior
10. Smoke Detectors — Test Monthly, Replace Batteries Annually
Test your smoke detectors every month.
Replace batteries once a year, or immediately if you hear a low-battery chirp.
Replace the entire detector every 10 years.
11. Water Filters — Refresh Every 6 Months
Whether in your fridge or a standalone filtration system, water filters lose effectiveness over time.
Replace them every 6 months, or as recommended by the manufacturer.
