Now another woman appeared to be entering it with her husband.

Mom felt as though she had been transported outside her own life, forced to observe something that could not possibly belong to her.

She wanted to ask dozens of questions.

Who was the woman? How long had this been happening? Had she been inside the house when Mom was away? Did Dad meet her during the day, or had he been bringing her home while Mom believed he was working?

Most of all, Mom wanted to know why.

But she did not ask any of those questions immediately.

She continued looking at the photographs.

4. The Truth Behind the Pictures

Jade watched Mom carefully as she examined the images.

“I know this is difficult,” she said quietly. “I'm sorry.”

Mom raised her eyes.

“How many times have you seen them together?”

“Several times over the last few months. The first time was in a parking lot. I recognized Daniel, but I didn't think much of it. He could have been meeting a colleague.”

Jade paused before continuing.

“Then I saw them at a café. They were sitting very close together. I thought perhaps she was a relative or someone from work. But the way they behaved didn't look like an ordinary professional relationship.”

Mom listened without interrupting.

“The next time, I saw them walking together near a shopping center. They were holding hands. I took a photograph because I thought you might eventually need to know what I had seen.”

Jade looked uncomfortable admitting that she had taken the pictures.

“I wasn't trying to follow him. I happened to be in the same places. After I saw them more than once, I began to feel that ignoring it would be wrong.”

Mom returned her attention to the phone.

“Why didn't you tell me earlier?”

Jade lowered her head.

“Because I was afraid of being mistaken. I kept telling myself there might be an explanation. And honestly, I was afraid you might think I was trying to interfere in your marriage.”

That was understandable.

Jade and Mom were neighbors, not intimate friends. Bringing news of an alleged affair into someone else's marriage was a serious responsibility. If the photographs had been misunderstood, Jade could have caused unnecessary pain and damaged a long-standing relationship.

But if she remained silent and the photographs showed what they appeared to show, she would be allowing Mom to continue living without information that might fundamentally affect her life.

“I didn't want to destroy your family,” Jade added. “I just couldn't keep these pictures to myself.”

Mom looked at her for a long moment.

“You did the right thing by showing me.”

Jade appeared surprised.

“You're not angry with me?”

“Why would I be angry with you?”

“I don't know. I thought you might feel that I had crossed a line.”

Mom glanced at the photographs again.

“If someone had told me this without showing me anything, I might have questioned it. But you came to me because you believed I deserved to know.”

Her voice was steady, although her face had grown pale.

Jade reached across the table and placed her hand near Mom's.

“I am so sorry, Helen.”

Mom gave a small nod.

For several minutes, neither woman spoke.

Around them, ordinary life continued. Someone ordered a sandwich at the counter. A couple entered and searched for a table. A barista called out a customer's name.

The world had not stopped because Mom's marriage was suddenly in question.

That ordinary background made the moment feel even stranger. A few minutes earlier, Mom had been thinking about groceries and weekend plans. Now she was examining evidence that her husband might have been maintaining a secret relationship.

She finally handed the phone back to Jade.

“Thank you for telling me.”

Jade looked relieved that Mom had not reacted angrily, but she still appeared concerned.

“What are you going to do?”

Mom did not answer immediately.

She looked through the café window toward the street, where cars passed in both directions.

Then she turned back to Jade.

“Are you free on Saturday evening?”

Jade blinked.

“Saturday?”

“Yes. This Saturday.”

“I'm free, but why?”

Mom's expression changed slightly. It was not quite a smile, although there was something deliberate about the calmness in her face.

“I'd like you to have dinner with us.”

Jade stared at her.

“Dinner? At your house?”

“Of course.”

Jade looked as though she had misunderstood the question.

“Helen, I don't think I should—”

“Please,” Mom interrupted gently. “Come over at seven. I'll prepare something nice.”

Jade hesitated.

She had expected tears, anger, questions, perhaps a request to keep the photographs secret. She had not expected an invitation to dinner.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

Mom picked up her handbag.

“And Jade?”

“Yes?”

“Don't mention this to anyone else before Saturday.”

Jade nodded slowly.

As they stood to leave, she watched Mom closely, trying to understand what was going through her mind.

Mom gave her a brief hug before they parted.

Then she walked to her car and drove home.

For the entire journey, her expression remained composed.

But when she reached the driveway, she sat behind the steering wheel for several minutes without getting out.

She was not thinking about how to punish her husband.

She was trying to decide how to discover the truth without allowing the shock of the photographs to dictate her next move.

5. The Journey Home

The house looked exactly as it always had when Mom arrived.
