Mom's words made the distinction clear. Jade had brought the information to her attention, but she had not created the situation.

Before Jade could respond, Dad entered the house carrying a serving dish.

He was smiling.

“Dinner is almost ready.”

Then he noticed Jade.

“Ah, Jade. Good to see you.”

He set the dish down and wiped his hands on a towel.

“I'm glad you could make it.”

Jade forced a small smile.

“Thank you for inviting me.”

Dad glanced between the two women.

“Everything all right?”

“Of course,” Mom replied.

He seemed satisfied with the answer.

“I'll bring the rest of the food in a minute.”

As he returned to the backyard, Jade leaned toward Mom.

“He has no idea, does he?”

Mom watched the doorway.

“Not yet.”

For a moment, Jade looked as though she wanted to leave.

But Mom reached across the table and gently touched her hand.

“You came here because you believed I deserved the truth. Please stay long enough for me to hear it.”

Jade nodded.

She had no idea what would happen next, but she remained in her chair.

9. The Dinner Begins

The family ate together at seven-thirty.

Dad had prepared the grilled chicken, and Mom had arranged the rest of the meal. The table looked like the setting for an ordinary weekend dinner between neighbors.

At first, the conversation was deliberately casual.

Dad asked Jade whether she had been busy at work. Jade replied that the week had been demanding. Mom asked about the flowers in Jade's garden, and Jade described the new plants she had recently bought.

For several minutes, they discussed ordinary things.

Yet the atmosphere was far from relaxed.

Jade spoke carefully, choosing her words as though she were afraid of saying something that might trigger an argument. Dad seemed slightly puzzled by her reserve, but he continued eating.

Mom was unusually quiet.

She listened more than she spoke, observing the way Dad behaved when he believed everything was normal.

He made jokes, asked for more bread, and complained that the weather might turn cold the following week.

Every small detail reminded Mom of their shared life.

She remembered dinners when they had discussed family holidays, evenings when they had planned home improvements, and celebrations when they had sat around the same table with relatives.

The table had been a place of familiarity and connection.

Tonight, it had become the setting for a truth that could no longer remain hidden.

After the main course, Jade set down her fork.

Her hands were trembling slightly.

“Daniel,” she said.

Dad looked up.

“Yes?”

Jade glanced at Mom, then back at him.

“There's something you need to know.”

Dad frowned.

“What is it?”

Jade took a breath.

“I showed your wife the photographs.”

The change in Dad's expression was immediate.

He stopped moving.

For a moment, he appeared not to understand the words.

“What photographs?”

Jade's voice was quiet but clear.

“The photographs of you with the woman you've been seeing.”

Dad's face tightened.

He looked at Jade, then at Mom.

“What is she talking about?”

Mom placed her fork beside her plate.

“You know exactly what she's talking about, Daniel.”

He stared at her.

“Helen—”

“The photographs,” Mom repeated. “The ones showing you with that young woman.”

Dad's face had become pale.

He opened his mouth, then closed it again.

Jade sat motionless.

Mom remained calm.

For several seconds, the only sound was the faint hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen.

Finally, Dad pushed his chair back slightly.

“This is ridiculous.”

Mom looked directly at him.

“Is it?”

“You're making a serious accusation based on photographs taken out of context.”

“Then explain them.”

Dad glanced toward Jade.

“Why would you take pictures of me?”

“Because I saw you with her several times,” Jade replied. “I thought Helen deserved to know.”

“You had no right to interfere in my private life.”

Jade's expression changed.

“Your private life became relevant to your wife when you started bringing another woman into the picture.”

Dad turned sharply toward Mom.

“Helen, please. We can talk about this privately.”

Mom did not move.

“We will talk about it. But not before you answer one question.”

She paused.

“Who is she?”

Dad stared at the table.

He did not answer.

Mom waited.

“Daniel, who is the woman?”

He rubbed his forehead.

“It's complicated.”

Mom's expression remained steady.

“Then start explaining.”

10. The Silence That Followed

Dad had always been good at managing difficult conversations.

At work, he could remain calm when colleagues disagreed with him. He knew how to redirect a discussion, postpone an uncomfortable decision, or offer an explanation that made a problem appear less serious.

At home, he rarely needed to use those skills. Their disagreements were usually small enough to resolve with a few sentences.

Tonight was different.

The photographs had made it impossible to pretend that nothing had happened.

Dad looked from Mom to Jade and back again.

“I don't understand why we're doing this in front of someone else.”

Mom replied quietly, “Because she brought me information that you apparently chose not to tell me.”

“That doesn't mean she should be involved in our marriage.”

“She became involved when she saw you with another woman and decided I deserved to know.”

Dad shook his head.

“You don't know the whole story.”

“Then tell me the whole story.”

He remained silent.

Mom folded her hands on the table.

“You have been married to me for thirty-two years. I am asking you a straightforward question. Who is she?”

Dad looked down.

“Her name is Laura.”
