My Nana Was One Clever Woman!
Growing up, I was always amazed by how effortlessly my nana handled household chores. No matter the mess, she had a simple, clever trick to fix it—always done with a touch of creativity and a whole lot of love. Her home stayed spotless, and she made cleaning feel more like an art than a chore.
One of the lessons I remember most was her brilliant cleaning hack using nothing more than rubber gloves. Long before “going green” became a trend, she was already finding practical and eco-friendly ways to keep her home tidy.
1. Nana’s Ingenious Rubber-Glove Trick
Her trick was simple: she used a pair of rubber gloves to remove dust and pet hair from furniture and upholstery. The static electricity from the gloves pulled in dust and hair like a magnet—especially handy on fabric surfaces where vacuums sometimes fall short.
She’d just run her gloved hands across the surface, gather everything into a pile, and toss it out. Easy, effective, and surprisingly fun.
2. Step 1: Gather Your Materials
To try it yourself, you’ll need:
-
A pair of rubber gloves (textured ones work best)
-
A small bowl of water to slightly dampen the gloves if needed
A snug fit will give you better control and make the process smoother.
3. Step 2: Prepare an Essential Oil Spray
Nana loved finishing her cleaning with a homemade freshening spray:
10 drops of lavender essential oil + 1 cup of water
She’d spritz this after cleaning to deodorize the room naturally—no harsh chemicals, just a calming scent with antibacterial benefits.
4. Step 3: Clean with Ease
Put on the gloves and gently rub the surface you want to clean. The static will attract dust and hair instantly.
If an area is stubborn, lightly dampen the gloves to boost the effect.
Then gather the debris, toss it out, and finish with a quick spray of the essential oil mixture.
5. Step 4: Disposal and Cleanup
After collecting the dust and hair, throw them away immediately so they don’t float back into the room.
Rinse the gloves and, if you used the essential oil spray, wipe the surface with a clean cloth to remove any residue.
6. More of Nana’s Old-School Cleaning Tricks
Nana had plenty of natural tricks:
-
Vinegar + baking soda for stubborn stains
-
Lemon juice to polish metal and remove rust
These methods were inexpensive, effective, and gentle on the environment.
7. Why Essential Oils Work
Essential oils contain natural antimicrobial compounds like terpenes and phenols. Oils such as tea tree, lavender, and eucalyptus can kill bacteria and fungi, leaving areas clean and fresh without synthetic disinfectants.
8. The Benefits of Natural Cleaning
Natural cleaners reduce exposure to harsh chemicals, lower the risk of allergies, and are safer for kids and pets. They also break down more easily in the environment, minimizing pollution and waste.
9. Tips for Keeping a Dust-Free Home
-
Declutter to reduce dust-collecting surfaces
-
Use air purifiers
-
Invest in good HVAC filters
-
Wash bedding and curtains regularly
-
Stick to a weekly cleaning routine
Consistency makes a huge difference.
10. Nana’s Timeless Wisdom
Nana’s cleaning methods remain relevant because they’re practical, simple, and sustainable. Her resourcefulness reminds us that smart solutions don’t have to rely on expensive tools or harsh chemicals.
11. Traditional Tricks in Modern Times
Today, many people are rediscovering these old-fashioned cleaning hacks, thanks to the rising interest in eco-friendly living. Even modern cleaning brands now incorporate essential oils and natural ingredients—proof that Nana’s wisdom still shines today.
