New Study Reveals Strong Genetic Link Between Endometriosis and Immune Disorders

Endometriosis linked to higher cardiovascular disease risk

A recent study published in Human Reproduction has revealed a significant genetic connection between endometriosis and various immune-related conditions, suggesting that women with endometriosis face a higher risk of developing autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases. This groundbreaking research is the first to investigate the genetic basis of these comorbidities.

The study analyzed data from the UK Biobank, examining over 8,000 cases of endometriosis alongside more than 64,000 cases of immune system disorders. Researchers found that women with endometriosis had a 30% to 80% increased risk of developing autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, multiple sclerosis, coeliac disease, and psoriasis.

Importantly, the researchers identified shared genetic variants between endometriosis and several of these immune conditions—particularly rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. This overlap suggests that the diseases may be driven by common biological mechanisms. Such insights could pave the way for integrated treatment strategies and the potential repurposing of existing drugs to target both endometriosis and related immune disorders.

The study also points to a possible causal relationship between endometriosis and rheumatoid arthritis, indicating that having one condition may increase the risk of developing the other. These findings underscore the importance of proactive monitoring and early intervention for women with endometriosis, particularly for signs of autoimmune disease.

Researchers are hopeful that these discoveries will lead to more personalized and effective treatment options, ultimately improving health outcomes for millions of women affected by endometriosis and its associated conditions.
